Searching for the Right Connection!
« on: March 15, 2008, 01:54:00 PM »

I'm getting ready to start installing the electronics on my SERK. Zumo, 2WT amp/speakers permanently mounted in front, and Hawg Wired 150W amp/Polk speakers in the detachable KTP. So I need to make the wiring from the bike to the KTP easily detachable as well. I think I only need connectors for the amp, which is the audio signal and the power wiring. I think the power is 10 gage, and the signal wire is much smaller. Am I right about this? Is there a single connector that can be used for this? Where to get them? Molex? Waterproof? Between all the electronic gurus we have, I'm hoping someone can help make this simple for me. TIA for your help gang! :2vrolijk_21:

id do 2 seperate plugs, run one on each side of the trour pak bracket. keeping power and signal seperate. also the guage of the wires will probally be different enough that its not a one size fits all application

Kinda what I figured. Just thought I'd confirm that the plugs can't be made in any configuration you want. Do you have a convenient source for the connectors I need? Thanks Neal. :2vrolijk_21:

If memory serves correctly those large power/ground leads to the HW amp are 10 gauge.  Howie, hit a good car audio shop.  Some 20 year old kid who is used to packing 7 tons of audio equpment in the back of a Corolla will have disconnects for that cabling.

Good idea Don. Any easy online place that has good stuff for this application? Anyone here have or gets them?

I've actually got a good car audio shop here in town.  With them close by it's easier and more sure to just to look and lay on hands when I need something like that.

Whatever you do, just make sure you make sure the connections are waterproof. Most car audio shops don't have to worry about the environment you'll have to deal with on the bike. Simple insulated crimps and screws won't cut it for the bike like it works for car amps.

Thanks for the replies and links. Waterproof sounds like the way to go. The Deutch connectors are waterproof, right? Neal's link to that EBay store has them for 10 gauge power wiring. The guy says he doesn't sell a crimping tool for it though. Is one really necessary to assemble the connector? Can it be done without one?

BTW, is waterproof really necessary. HD doesn't provide waterproof connectors for all their stuff. The LED saddlebag lid spoiler connectors are not waterproof. That's the only electrical add-on I have to compare too. I imagine it's more critical with an audio power connection.

I'll have a LED KTP spoiler (brakes/tailights) and interior TP light to power, besides the audio signal wire. Can these be combined into one Deutch connector? If I can power the amp's 10 gauge with one, and put all the other connections on another, it won't be too cumbersome using 2 plugs. I'd hate to have 4 electrical plugs for this.

Thanks again for your help gang! :2vrolijk_21:

This is the kit he's selling for 8-10 gauge:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DEUTSCH-1-PIN-DTHD-CONNECTOR-KIT-8-10-AWG-60-AMPS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ107062QQihZ024QQitemZ370026519304QQtcZphoto

Is this what I want for the amp's power. If so, then all I need is the right connector for the other stuff I mentioned below, and hopefully all in one plug. Thanks :2vrolijk_21:

Yes, get a single Deutsch connector set for all the small legs.  And another for the two big ones.  There are Deutsch (or at least Deutsch-like) connectors for 10 gauge.  Hhave used them before and got them from the audio shop.

Crimps?  The tool makes it much simpler.  MUCH simpler.  Once you get your bits in hand go to an audio shop and give them pizza money to take 10 minutes and make all your crimps for you.  Just bring in enough wire legs to do it all that are all longer than you'll need.  A good crimping tool you might never use again is a lot more expensive than a pizza.

I went ahead and bought a crimp for the #20 contacts. LOVE IT!!! Deutsch is VERY proud of their tools, so I only bought the one size. The crimps it makes are flawless.

I just finished doing a couple crimps on some AMP contacts for the tail light. I got them done, but they're not as nice as what I can do with the Deutsch, but then again I do so few AMP contacts that a tool isn't feasible.

Don's right. Find someone with the right tool and greet them with beer and pizza. The better crimps will be worth it. Heck, if you give them enough beer and pizza, they might rent you the tool. Not likely, but it's worth a shot.
