Harley Ultra Classic Screamin Eagle
« on: March 18, 2008, 10:56:53 AM »

Hello all. I am new to the board. Just purchased an 06 CVO Ultra Classic Sreamin Eagle. My questions are:

What is the best synthetic oil to run (leaning towards either Royal Purple or Amsoil) what weight and how many miles does one go on this bike on this oil before changing fluids?

Does this bike come with two headsets (driver and passenger) or just one...I received only one

Many thanks

Hello Larry. Welcome aboard!

There are many threads on this board about which oil to use including the pros and cons. Do a search and you will find a vast wealth of information. Personally I run Amsoil.

As to the headset, yes it only comes with one from the factory.

Again, welcome aboard.

Thanks AJ...in your opinion, how many miles before changing do you go and what weight do you use?

Welcome Larry.  You might want to introduce yourself in the New Member section & get ready for

 :worthless:

AJ already said it best here - Oil is very subjective.  Do some research & you will find the one you like best.  Oil weight is 20-50 & my change interval is 5,000.  First change was at 1,000 miles.

Hope you enjoy the board - it's a great place.

That's an unfair question for AJ. AJ has 20,000 miles on his bike and has never changed the oil. He doesn't have to as the dealer changes it for him when he takes it in for the 5,000 mile head gasket service that is required on the 110.

I crack myself up. :huepfenlol2:

T bone

Welcome to the site!
Just an FYI,
You are T (with a space) bone
There is already a Tbone here. ( that's T with no space bone)
He's an important part of this site just as we hope you will be, but others may get the two of you confused.
Not asking you to change but I can tell you the other and first Tbone has been here since time began. (sorry Bob)
I'm sure it was the space between T and bone that allowed you to sign up using that name.
As I said in the beginning, welcome to the site and glad your here.
Get ready to get your checkbook out!

You know what's so funny about that: the SM, who just replaced my oil when he put in the new gaskets in, wants to know when he can schedule the 20k servive at $500.
These guy are ruthless!

Maybe they are just looking for an opportunity to get in your pocket rather than sending the bill to the MoCo Warranty Dept? :nixweiss: ;D ;D

Larry - Welcome to the site from Illinois!   :2vrolijk_21:

You will get lots of opinions on types of oil...I personally use Mobil 1 V-Twin in the motor, Redline MTL in the primary and Redline Shockproof in the tranny...

I change oil every spring, every fall and every 3500 miles in between...

Hope you enjoy the site!  Don't worry about all the money you will soon be spending customizing your ride - you can always make more!

Larry, I'm in with Mob1 V Twin in all three holes.

Live in Seattle area and it doesn't get too warm but I have run it in hot temps and it is great.

Changed out the Syn 3 after a group ride to Cripple Creek in '06 that had my trans sounding like it had a hundred marbles in it going through a cofrfee grinder.

Since the switch to Mob1 V Twin all is well.

Here's a thread on the synthetics:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=6343.0

Mocil one thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=7277.0

Hope these help your research, Rog

Hey T  Bone. Welcome aboard. To weigh in on oil... If your bike has high miles you might not want to make a major change in oil type or weight from what has been used. I have seen engines broken in on mineral oil and switched to synthetic that started using oil. I use the HD one in three every 5,000 miles or at least once per riding season and always put it away with clean fluids.
Good luck with your CVO.
And only one headset from the factory.

Agree with Tompen on switching sometimes but since the SEUC uses Syn 3 it's a switch from one synthetic to another and should not present any issues as from mineral oil to synthetic may.

T Bone,
Only going to re-iterate what the others have said;  do your research and choose what you feel will fit your needs better.  I run Mobil 1 V-Twin in all three areas of my bike, but mainly because it's almost as easy to find as Syn3 is if I'm caught out on the road and need oil for whatever reason.  I was torn between AmsOil and Mobil 1 and decided to go with Mobil 1 for what I said earlier.  Both are great synthetic motor oils and you won't go wrong with either.

And also, welcome to the site...can't wait to start spending your money.   ;)
