I think I f***** up my paint on my tank...HELP!!
« on: March 30, 2008, 02:21:51 PM »

The other day, while working with some Silicone, apparently some very small drops hit my tank on my RockerC.  I just saw it today.  They are like little wiggly lines and they came right off of the chrome on my tank insert, but where the silicone hit the paint on the insert and the tank, it is leaving small foot prints.  I tried to gently scratch off the silicone, but I think it may have etched itself into the clear coat.  I tried Glare cleaner, HD cleaner, the Honda stuff, but it is still leaving its mark.

As you would expect, water beads right off the silicone footprint, so I'm not sure what I can do next?  I'm not too worried about the insert, as it is a removeable, replaceable part, but the few marks on the tank have me concerned.  Any ideas???

I'll try to take a pic and show you what I mean.

You might try Dawn dish soap.  I'm not sure about silicone but it will remove oil and grease, and not hurt the clear coat.  Oh, it also strips the wax, too.  It's what I use to strip the wax before doing it again.  It has to be Dawn....I've not found another one that works with grease and oil.

Get some 1200 grit automotive sandpaper and wetsand the area ever so carefully. Wipe off the residue and buff lightly with rubbing compound (machine buffer if you have one)  Polish with a finisher like 3M FineseIt and then wax   Your problem should be a bad memory at that point

Thanks folks.  I'm pissed at myself for being so careless :-[  I'll try what you mention above.

Have you worked with a product called Scratch and Swirl, that may help.

I used a combination of the above solutions and eliminated most of the "stuff".  Covered it with Glare Polish and now it can hardly be seen.  I guess I need to be more careful. It could have been a lot worse.
