Exhaust mount squeek
« on: March 31, 2008, 02:42:42 PM »

Hello again everyone!

at idle, I have a squeak at the rubber exhaust mount on the LHS as you are sitting on the bike. When I hold the exhaust tip, it goes away. Fellow Harley riders tell me that this is common and that there is nothing you can do. I am thinking that applying some kind of graphite powder but suspect it will come back again. Anyone experience this and is there a remedy?

Many thanks! Larry

The rubber over time gets hard and then starts to squeak.  You can spray them with a cable type lube, WD40 or such and you will get temporary releif.  I guess you could replace the rubbers.

I had that happen on my 02's left pipe at around 5K miles.  Had the dealer look at it when I had the service done...don't know what they did, :nixweiss: but it never came back up to the day I traded it in on the SEUC.

Graphite would make a mess - I would try some silicone spray...   ;)

Louder exhaust would take care of the problem. ;)

Had what I thought was the same problem. Replaced the rubber in the bracket, rubber pads under the bags and finally figured out it was the rear catch on the saddlebag. A little lube there and squeak is gone. Good luck.

I replaced the left side rubber at about 9K and noise went away. Funny the right side has 25K and has never made any noise.

As some of you may know, I don't hear very well, so I wasn't aware of the problem, but Naitram and Just Q pointed out to me in MV 06 that my brand new RG with 4k on the odo had a sqeaky exhaust. After some examination we determined it was the left side rubber mount. Silicone spray on the offending piece of rubber fixed the problem

When I clean my bike (which isn't very often I must admit) I give those rubbers a shot of WD 40.  Works for me.

Rather than constantly respraying with silicone (try to keep it off the brakes and tires, btw), get some silicone grease at your handy dandy auto parts store.  Most have little packets of the stuff, often used to lubricate caliper slide rails and other parts during brake repairs.  Look for the stuff that says hi temp and safe for rubber.
