You're right.  Harley at one time or another has seemed to screw these motors up from the very top to the very bottom.  This is another that seems to be better now.  But, like the rest, it will be apart in their hands so they might as well look.

There have been issues with valve spring retainer interference with the side walls of the rocker boxes on the exhaust valves...

If you leave your valve spring retainers banging on the side of your rocker boxes long enough, there is a good chance of having a problem with valve keepers and valve guides.   

Of course, seems like there is a good chance of having valve guide problems if you don't have valve spring retainer interference too!

Given the experiences of so many others make absolutely certain they don't simply do the obvious and just replace head gaskets.  Make sure they very carefully inspect the cylinders themselves for any sign of movement or expansion by the cylinder liner.  If there is any hint of it don't let them just deck the top off of it.  Replace the cylinders.  There have also been a few cases where cylinder heads have dropped valve guides.  Since the heads will be off in their hands they are worth giving a good thorough inspection at the same time.

All that should be on their dime as part of this job.  Given these engine's history there are no unreasonable requests there.  Beyond that the crankshaft issues seem to have faded.  But if you want as much comfort as you can get you might pay them an extra hour's labor to check the crank runout while it's this far apart to begin with.

Well the bike is back.

They checked the liners and the clearances on the valves - all OK - and put the new composite gaskets in both the front and rear cylinders.

Just need to ride her some now and hope that the problem is fixed.

Good to hear you've got your baby back home.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that all is well now.  I'm not sure about over there on the other side of the pond, but around here we have a rite of spring called the blessing of the bikes.  It usually involves a priest and some holy water.  You may want to give that a try as well.  It can't hurt to have some help from the big biker upstairs.

Wow! I'm glad I took the time to check out this thread. I am a little confused now though.  I'm pretty sure the service manager at the local dealer said that I needed to sacrifice a goat! Or did he say a pig?  Maybe I just got the pig confused with another thread.

I think you definitely got the Pig confused with another thread - and I think Binx will still refuse all access to the aforementioned porcine creature!

Goats are bit too PC so I suggest that you have a word with your service manager and see if he can come up with a couple of Virgins (in a manner of speaking!)

Remember - us Brits only painted ourselves blue to diguise the fact we were e***n freezin!
