Sportster 883C
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:24:11 PM »

OK, My wife drove me to the local Triumph dealer today to drive home her used Sportster that we just bought.  It was fun and I'm going to have some questions about it.  It was so narrow that I couldn't see past my shoulders in the mirrors.  1st, the motor is REAL dull.  It's all aluminum, even the heads, and looks too "battleship gray".  It's a used bike and I don't want to spend a ton of money when she doesn't even have her license yet and is nervous just sitting on it.  Is there a company (like Kuryakyn) that makes after market chrome covers for the motor and oil tank?

How about slip on exhaust?  Are Dyna muffs interchangeable?  The year is 2004.  I'd like to put SE slip ons on it but I don't have a 2004 parts catalog.  Anyone have the part number?  TIA.  There will be more questions the more I get into it.

I might be able to lay my hands on a 2004 parts catalog but I'll have to remember where I put it......

if you don't want to spend money on chroming, Mothers aluminum mag polish will make it look almost as good as chrome with some elbow grease...used it on my sporty that was very dull ('97 1200) and it made one heckuva difference...

Thanks for the recommendation.  Are those chrome belt and timing covers on the lower right?  My heads are very dull polished aluminum.  I'll try the Mothers.

Semi-Chrome polish in the yllow box works good too but your wittle fingers will get sore...find some tiny buffing pads and use some rotary tool type thing to aide.

For real dirty aluminium, like my vintage hondas get (they oxidize naturally) I use Never-Dull...Not for use on chrome but does a great job on preping the aluminium surface for a final polish with mothers, semi-chrome or wenol's red followed by blue, good stuff.....Don't forget the barley pops to swill so you can encourage the spousal unit to keep on rubbing!

With that much polished aluminum, I think I'd be looking at a Mothers Power Ball or other powered applicator. If Chip Foose says he likes it, it MUST be good, or he's just getting paid to say it. :huepfenlol2:

Nope, everything was a VERY dull aluminum till I polished the crap out of it. Yes, my widdle fingers were worn out...but it was well worth it.

The only parts on the bike that are polished aluminum are the heads.  From the sounds of it, I can shine them up.  The lower crank covers are cast aluminum with a rough texture that are battleship gray and quite ugly.  Here's a a couple very poor pics to give you an idea (taken with my cell phone).
