Audio System not working
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:10:35 PM »

Brand new FLHTCUSE3.  The radio/XM/CD worked great with the bike off.  Once I started it up these all would work for a few seconds/minutes and then nothing but static.  Sometimes the station would come back on clear as a bell for a few seconds and then back to static.  The CD is working (you can see the timer) but no sound.

Any ideas?  Is there something I pushed that screwed up my reception?  I only have 150 miles on the bike and this was the second  ride of the year after having it delivered 2 months ago.

I'd be heading to the dealer and tell them to fix it. Not worth messing with if it doesn't work.

I know you bike is a lot newer, but my husband's radio - stereo really never worked right from day one.  he complained but didn't do anything about it.  Looked to see what a good replacement would be, got good recommendations from others on the site here.  I made him though, before he bought something new, get a warranty replacement.

Well,  The stock stereo works just great for him now ----- four/five years of improvements on that stock stereo - works great.

Get your money's worth before shopping elsewhere.  In my opinion of course.

It's not "reception" (AM, FM or SAT) if you're also losing audio with the CD player.  That's a radio output problem of some kind.  Potentially speakers too of course.  But not likely you're losing both at the same time.  Make it the dealer's problem.  Radios are expensive.  You don't want to have to buy a radio yourself because they try to deny a warranty claim saying "you messed with it."

It could be a short in your speaker switch, mine was bad from day one and the dealer replaced it.  I was a amazed that they actually had one in stock.

Well, I pulled the bike outside the garage today for garage spring cleaning.  Turned the radio/CD on just to check it and everything worked fine.  Now I'm wondering if the seat heaters (which my wife had on yesterday when the audio system had problems) might affect the audio?

Does the seat heater work when the accessory switch is on?  If it does, then this is not the problem.  (I turned the seat heater on while the radio was working and with the switch set on Accessory and couldn't feel any heat.  The seat heater works great while the bike is running.)

I'm going out to ride now and test the seat heater/audio hypothesis!

Maybe the wife is jamming the reception somehow… she may have to be left at home next time! :bananarock:

My heated stuff does not work on my bike unless underway.

Course it doesn't much work anyways, so I am surely not an expert

If your seat is plugged into the Customer Accessory connection, which happens, it would only work when the accessory switch is on. The seat should be plugged into the heated seat connector which is a connector with only 2 wires in it, not 4 like is in the Accessory plug. I don't know where they put it on the '08s, but on the '07s, it was on the left side, down next to the battery.

There should be no interaction between the radio and the seat.

Time to call the dealer.

My seat heater was plugged in to the accessory plug at the factory and works with the engine off.  I always make sure to turn off the grips and seat before turning off the motor so that battery isn't quickly drained when turning on the radio occasionally.  It's easy to forget.

My guess on the sound problem with the radio is the big ugly black plug on the side of the amp under your tour pack was slightly loose.  Happened to me - no sound - pushed it in - sound.  May need to be checked out.

Heated seats have no effect on the radio.  Should work regardless of Acc. switch unless it's wired wrong.  My seats get warm regardless of whether the bike is running or not - so do the grips.

As Chief noted - likely time to take it to the dealer.
