LRB Composite Rotors
« on: April 05, 2008, 09:21:34 PM »

Many of us are using the LRB (lyndall) Z brake pads.  They now offer composite rotors for baggers which is reported to greatly improve braking with reduced weight.  Anyone tried these yet?

I haven't.  Cost prohibitive at this point when their Z Plus pads and stock rotors are getting the job done satisfactorily.  They've been out for a pretty good while, look great, and I'm certain they increase the effectivity of their pads significantly, but from my foxhole, that cost target is way out of range for the benefit to be gained.

Ok, now I feel like it.

"The APEX Performance Rotor is an ultra-light friction ring fully CNC machined from functionally gradient metal composite material"

Ambigious enough of a description to make you think they don't really want to tell their friends or competitors what the material is...

compacted graphite?  powdered metal?  graphite impregnated steel?  carbon fiber impregnated?    :nixweiss:

I had the same response the first time seeing that awhile back.  It's one of those double-take things you see and just realize you didn't think it actually said anything until you look at it again; and confirm it didn't really say anything.  But it sounds very special.  Then again it should for almost 600 bucks per rotor.

Finally came time to replace my stock detonator floating rotors after 41K miles (excessive runout on the fronts).  Decided to bite the bullet and order the Lyndall composite rotors with Red Plus pads and just installed on my bike.  Wow, what a difference, much better braking, no fade, two finger operation with stock calipers.  High quality construction, fit and finish, easy bolt on installation.  Best part is that Lyndall is running a Sturgis special which saved me $400 on an order of three rotors and three sets of pads.  BTW, special runs through the end of August if anyone is looking to upgrade their rotors regardless of caliper choice.  Like their Z pads, I give this product :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Some pics of the install...you can order many different color combinations and designs.  I chose the silver friction ring, chrome arc carrier and orange buttons.  These rotors are more open and you can see more of the stock detonator wheels with them...

They're sharp looking, Pete.  Is the chrome better than that 'industrial finish' that the stock ones had?  How 'bout posting a pic of what the silver looks like after some pad scrubbing?  What was the bottom line 'damage' after the Sturgis discount?   :nixweiss: thanks, spyder

Chrome is much better than stock, suberb quality.  These pics were taken after I put about 100 miles on them including some hard braking.  Minimal marking due to pads as they advertise.  Total damage including pads was about $1,200 excluding shipping.  Actually they screwed up my order and didn't ship when they said they would, ended up throwing in three extra sets of pads and sent the whole shipment UPS Red label at no charge.  Good company and the owner, Paul, is first class.

Orange button are shown in the online brochure, but you are right, not on the website.  I called in my order and he said orange was available.  Download the brochure and you'll see all they have to offer.
