New Front Motor Mount SUCKS
« on: April 06, 2008, 09:44:31 PM »

:(  Ok noticed end of last year when I was running the SERG on the dyno for something to do, that the front motor mount was bad.  At the least very near end of life.  Went to local Harley dealer and ordered a new mount.  The parts dude informed me that my part number was an xxxx-A rev, and that they had now moved by that past the B rev to the C rev.  Thought nothing of it.  Got the new part and replaced it that night.  First never had a Twin cam A motor'd bike before, I also suspect the other had been in bad shape since I got the scoot, anyway soon as it fired her up there was some very noticeable vibration at idle.  I was use to some but this was worse by factor of 10.  Called the parts dude and asked the guys in our shop, all said the later revs where stiffer.  Well figured it might "break in" and mellow out.  No such luck.  Since we started getting some riding weather here in Iowa I have come to realize I can't stand it any longer.  Anyone have suggestions on replacement mount? I have hear Velvet ride come up but no luck finding on the net so far.

I think I ordered mine direct from Velva at the time.  I also believe Mark at www.mandmcycles.com can get you one and save 15-20% off..  J&P wants list for everything in their book/website.

I bought my Velva-Ride mount and stabilizers from M&M about a year ago; at that time they had the best price I could find on the net.

Velva-ride and m&mcycles is the way to go.  You will need to slightly modify your oil cooler mounting plate in order to clear the mount.

I'm not being a smartass, so I think maybe I'm missing something here. What's the issue with the new HD motormounts? Are they too stiff, or not stiff enough? And the Velva-Glide, what makes them so much better? What's the oil cooler bracket mod, grinding some of it away I think, right?

Thanks

Here's a pic of the relief I had to grind into my oil cooler bracket for the front of the VR mount. It's just a little smiley ground out of the rear of the mount plate. The same effect could be obtained by removing a smidge of material from the VR mount as well.

The parts book for 2007 has the C version.  16207-79C.  Does that mean that the aftermarket VelvaRide would be smoother?

The VelvaRide mount is a urethane mount, not rubber. It's very stiff, and could have adverse effects too. It will be a much stiffer feel. I have it on my Pro Street, and their stabilizers too. Very stiff driveline. I wouldn't call it rubbermounted any more. Not solid mount, but not rubber mount either. More like in between.

If you don't wan't it so stiff, look at TrueTrack's front mount. So you're aware, I run the TrueTrack front mount, a TrueTrack, and VelvaRide Stabilizers. It's a little stiffer, but not as stiff as my Pro Street.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried the True-Isohlator/True Rise from True-Track? They have shims that raise the front of the motor, this supposedly changes the weight distribution of the bike to help reduce wobble. I just wonder how much a 1/4" would change in the front to back weight distribution.

I don't think I would change my front angle with the spacer (as Chief)..  I think that is for extreme cases with a lot of other mod's..  I do like the Velva front mount though.

That powder coated shot of the mount Chuck really looks nice.  My black looks pretty nasty.  Bob

I'm trying to track down some annoying vibration so last night I pulled out the VR front mount and went back to the stock HD mount. I'll ride tonight to see how the picture changes.

We will all be interested in hearing your report.  My Velva is a lot better than the stock 05 mount (and it wasn't broken).  If you still have the vib, take the Stabo's out next.  Anyone that can strip a bike down to the frame and back will figure it out.

I have the entire True Trak setup they call Tracula which includes the Isohlator.  http://www.true-track.com/1_2006_016.htm

Unfortunately I did the Traxxion stuff at the same time.  I can tell you that my SEUC is on a rail and very grounded.

With the solid brass bushings and all the rest I notice a bit of vibration at idle, more shake than vibration and only at an idle, on the road it's great.
