My bike has 45k miles so I expect a little valve train noise but geez .. This is the first twincam bike that I have owned and it is way louder than any evolution motor bike I have owned. I was really surprised by that. Is it just my bike? Can the valves be adjusted to take out some of the noise?

Have you check the cam chain tensioners at all? Do you know the history of them on your bike? With 45K on it, if you have the original tensioners, I'd have them checked immediately. I'm sure they need replacement. That's the time to do some improvements in there, and replace your oil pump too.

Besides what Howie said about the tensioners, is this your first fairing bike, too?  The fairing has a tendency to amplify/exaggerate the valvetrain noise.  Could just be the nature of the beast.

I am going to check the tensioner (at least the outer one) later this week.

VAZHOG tells me that when I hear funny unexplained noises to turn up the stereo.

No seriously, the wiser folks identifed the chain tensioners ..................
Sounds like it could be an issue.

I was just trying to be funny.

I am thinking that the gear drive is out of the question for me so what other improvements would you recommend?

I had the bike checked out by a local shop and they say that the tensioners look good and that the bike is in good mechanical shape in their estimation. They say the noise is normal for a SE bike.

I have put a couple of hundred miles on the bike and the noise seems excessive to me. I made a video with sound of my bike. Do your bikes sound this loud?

Mine had a noise in the motor I didn't like at about 2200, Rode it home, l, put a set of lifters in with quick install pushrods...changed it over to Amsoil, Most of noise gone very quiet, pulled cam cover, installed Baisley Spring, rest of  noise gone, remember if you are running stock exhaust they are really quite and behind the faring you will hear all the noise. Oil pressure can make a  big difference in a twin cam  , run quieter, runs cooler..Greg

can you tell me the brand / part numbers of the lifters/rods that you used? Also did you use the 15 or 30 baisley spring?

How much of a job is it to install a Baisley spring?

I just ordered a baisley spring. Only 16 shipped so can't really loose. Other than the pipes and floorboards being in the way it looks like an easy job. Also need to know what amsoil to order? 20-50 or 20-60?

Just PM HD Dude...Jim.. He's  an Amsoil Dealer and will fix you right up with a case of MCV 20-50 . Spring is an easy install. just make your self a little tool. I used a piece of 5/16 steel tubing cut a slot in in big enough for a 1/8 " roll pin to go thru . That let's you push up the spring and drive out or  reinstall the roll pin  whne you change out spring make sure to use  a new roll pin and tune the slot away from  spring. Mine SERG warm carries about 50 lb presssure  @ 3000 and hot idle about 10-15. Jim can get you right up to speed if need be.  Greg
