New and Improved Gasket for 110 Cylinders(NOW on Back Order)
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:12:40 PM »

Scheduled bike for rear cylinder leak with MOCO and my local dealer and they tore it down and was told by MOCO that the New Gaskets are on back order till the 20th of April. They put it all back together with new old gasket and I will have to wait till the 21st to get her back in the shop. My dealer thinks they are making a new, new, new, new improved gasket over the lastest but I think MOCO is using them in the production line and they would rather sell new bikes than repair used 08's with cylinder leaks. Oh Well!! She does run good and no leak right now. :-\

Bear,

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear about your troubles.  :-\ Maybe that explains why my dealer hasn't called yet to say my new head gaskets are here...  :nixweiss: They said they would order a set for me a couple of weeks ago and they haven't called to say they're here yet. Maybe this is a good sign though if they are using them at the factory now.

My 07 110 blew the head gasket doing 75mph on Interstate 80 last week end while riding home from Pittsburgh.
HD dealer had some "old" new gaskets in stock and they never mentioned about these new gaskets on back order.
My guess is that they really do not know yet.  So thanks for sharing and I am going to call them now.

Sounds like typical HD they don't know what they are doing.

Remember, as far as I've heard, there is no part number for the composite gaskets.  I'd like to order a set so that when it leaks again, I won't have to wait.

If I was to order a set, paying for them out of my pocket, they would be the Cometic brand layered head gasket. I know that HD says Cometic builds for them, but they may build to HD specs, I have had trouble in the past with the SE gaskets and have not had any trouble with the Cometic gaskets. I would also ask the tech that would be working on your bike to check the cylinder stud torque into the block, should be between 10 to 20ftlbs, that is done with a ball bearing under the head bolt and torqued to spec while the cylinder is off the bike. I have seen this missed on bikes that have had the heads changed before, the stud backs off a little when the head is pulled and its not checked, when the head and gasket is installed they torque it but its not true torque with a untorqued stud, have seen them pull the threads in the case and have to be repaired.

If it matters, every bike I have (except the scooters) have Cometic brand layered head gaskets.
The Screaming Eagle ones are not worth blowing your nose on.
No matter the status of the bike it's one of the changes that's made to each one.
A piece of mind change!

Even the stock ones have it!  ;)

I'm confused, If the cylinder liner is slipping what good is a new head gasket going to do? Is it two separate problems,or does the slipping liner cause the leak at the gasket?

Primary failure mode has been the gasket. Some, not all, have had bad liners. You are right, if the liner moves, the gasket won't hold, but that's not happening in all.

I just checked with my dealer and he has confirmed the 16901-07A part has now been obsoleted and the composite gasket is the now 16801-07B. This is the mystery/graphite/composite/super secret by request only gasket that has been mailed out directly to the dealers on a case by case basis.

I don't know how much of a backorder time there is, but I would guess that they're going into production bikes first before warranty repairs.

Now that we've got a number for it, we can see if it's going to work. I hope so.

Black diamond just posted that he has a pair of the new gaskets in his hand but doesn't need them. Maybe you could get them from him and get your bike put back together. :nixweiss:
