I'm confused, If the cylinder liner is slipping what good is a new head gasket going to do? Is it two separate problems,or does the slipping liner cause the leak at the gasket?

I havent seen one tore down to look at it and I hope if I do get to see one its not mine

The head gasket is crushed inbetween the head and cylinder so that is what holds the cylinder in place from the torque that is applied to the cylinder head studs, maybe the cylinder started to move and the head gasket gives up, there is a lot of things that could lead to this. One my be the studs were not torqued correct to start with or the material and size are not adequate for the job they need to do ect. It looks like to me that Harley would have there top motor techs all over this problem or they may see a design flaw and are hoping that enough of them wont surface to have to make a major recall. Is it a problem in a specific serial number range or can it be traced back to rider habits or style of riding. I have my feelings on what it is, that is why I changed mine the second I got it to my shop, metal grows with heat.

I just visited Chicago Harley parts order site. They only list the 16801-07A gasket no B!  :nixweiss:

That is correct. I did the same yesterday. My dealer still has the -07A and has 10 of them in stock. I asked him to chedk HD Net and he then told me the -07A has been marked as oboslete. I don't know how long it will take Chicago and Zanottis to get the updates.

At first the response from HD Tech Services was "a bad batch of cylinders" but there seemd to be more stories about bad cylinders than one batch would make.

On the other hand, when mine was starting to leak again after getting the -07A gaskets, my dealer was going to do cylinders, rings and gaskets because replacing just the gaskets seemed stupid. It is possible that a lot of good cylinders were replaced in an attempt to try something different.

Some have had definite liner slippage, but I don't think we'll know how many good cylinders were replaced "just because". I'm hoping as we get more motors running with the -07B gasket, we'll see a dramatic drop in repeat performances of leaking gaskets.

Man I would have thought that HD would have been on this like a mad dog that new gasket is good material, we have used it for years on our industrial engines, just good clean surfaces no type of compound and proper touque and it will stay with ya.

Have you seen one that has had slippage, is the steel liner slipping in the cylinder itself? If so I would feel that that would be a improper interference fit or the engine ran to hot.

My '08 went in for it's 5k service last week and they saw an oil leak that I hadn't noticed yet. I guess that's a good thing that they are looking, but I just checked the work order and they used the 'A' gasket.

They are probably trying to get rid of their inventory. I'm sure the MoCo isn't going to take back discontinued parts.

I haven't personally seen any slipped liners. When mine was pulled down at 1,800 miles, they were fine without any detectable lip. They installed the -07A gasket and it lasted all of 3,000 miles before leaking again. I'm waiting for the report cards to come back on the -07B before I let them tear into again. I've put about 6,000 miles on it while it has been leaking and it is steady but not getting any worse. I may wait until this riding season is over before doing it again, unless the leak get worse, forcing me to act sooner.

Just for giggles which I know you guys dont have about this, have them check the torque before they pull the heads. I just got access to a thermal imagine camera and Im going to take a look see at my 110 with it. The pics of that new gasket looks like they put a heavy fire ring on it, maybe to help hold the liner in, oh thats sweet now it will go down and get the crank geeeeeesssssss that will be a mess to clean up if it does

But, if there's not an admitted problem why are they looking. :nixweiss: .............can we spell "avoid a recall at all costs"? :bananarock:

Ya know, riddle me this....... how in the world is ANY gasket going to help this problem when it is the sleeve slipping within the cylinder? I saw it first hand on my bike. They can make all the new, new, new, new, and new-A, B, C etc.  gaskets they want to, it ain't gonna do nothing but put a band aid on the problem. Its a bad design, they need to recall it, they won't.  :coolblue:

I guess there is a difference between the dealers and the MoCo. They are the ones that are responsible for doing a recall.
