Sound Distortion of Audio
« on: April 09, 2008, 01:49:19 PM »

Does anyone have a comment or answer to this.
It seams that at speeds over 70 mph the audio from my speakers F & R becomes distorted, and this occurs on Sat. or Fm. reception!  :nixweiss:

I found the sound to be distorted, generally speaking, much of the time on my Jester.  Stock speakers are not all that great, except the CB.  Music quality was awful.  High speed was worse but it sucked most of the time.

Might consider upgrading speakers/amp to a Hawg Wired - not cheap but the sound is much better.

Try lowering the bass setting and bringing up the treble a bit. Seems to help. Replacing the speakers with something better is the best solution.....

More times than not "distortion" is caused due to insufficient power 1st and crappy spkrs 2nd.

Well it distorts even more at over 100. Try that. It'll start sounding better at 70! ;D ;D ;D

Contact HD Dude and get some Hawg Wired components on yer bike. This thread will go away for you! :2vrolijk_21:

I have also been told that the buffing of the wind as it crosses your scooter :nixweiss: :nixweiss: will cause this fading in and out of sound at highway speeds.
Anyone got a thought on that?

A U.K. research company specializing in acoustics notes all of the
different aspects of sound traveling through the atmosphere in the
following article.  Note, in particular, the section on “Atmospheric
Effects,” which notes the absorption of sound by molecules but also
shows in a diagram how “winds will increase sounds downwind from a
source and reduce them upwind. This is not solely a result of the
velocity effect, but also because the spherical wave-front is deformed
by the prevailing wind.

Does the stock amp give enough output to power a set of hawgwired speakers? And are those the best choice for aftermarket? And is it a substantial difference in sound quality or just a little better?

Pete,
Those are good questions, and I hope someone has an opinion from their previous experience.

Good Looking CVO.

The stock speakers are 2-ohm and the HW speakers are 4-ohm, so I wouldn't use the 4-ohm speakers without an amp because the volume will be reduced. If you just want to upgrade speakers without adding an amp, HogTunes makes 2-ohm replacement speakers that are better than stock. J&M has 2-ohm speakers as well.

Thanks Chief, do you (does anyone) have any experience w/above listed speakers, and again, are these significantly better than stock? :confused5:

I installed 4 of the Hog Tunes speakers, 5 if you count the one that got smushed in the incident. They are better than stock, like replacing stock car speakers with good aftermarket units. :2vrolijk_21:

I've got HogTunes in my bike also. They are a definite step in the right direction over the stock speakers.

Thanks Chief and Fired00d, I will go this route then. I don't anticipate removing tourpak so I'd like to save some $ and speakers w/out a new amp will fit my budget without interfering w/ my other hobbies  :drink:

Hawg-Wired also makes the SX series speakers in 2 ohm versions. They are too big to fit in the rear pods though. In my honest opinion the Hog tunes or Hawg-wired speakers in 2 ohm versions are not all that better than the stockers.

The HK amp is the culprit of your distortion, it is caused by the amp clipping.
