Good observation.  I feel that my grocery bill has doubled in the last year, but your right, if the price of gas stays up, everything has to cost more.  Man oh man, not a good time to be uncertain about employment, for sure.

Nige,

I just thought it was bad here.....You're paying $10.70 per gallon?????

Regular Unleaded here is $3.15 per gallon and diesel is $3.64 per gallon

Not quite as bad at that, as our gallons are bigger than yours. A US Gallon of Diesel is costing us $8.61 - premium unleaded is around the same - and regular unleaded $8.23

Where we are REALLY getting stiffed is on heating and lighting our homes - and remember this is a cold country.  Heating oil is now at $4.11 for a US gallon. A fill of 1000l costs us $1087 and lasts around 6 weeks.  Gas (not liquid fuel, actual gas I mean!) we buy in 47kg bottles at around $100 a bottle.  We use one of those a week. Electricity is now around $67 a week for us.  So just for heating, lighting and cooking, we are paying around $350 a week, before we put a drop of gas in the car.....

To answer another question, the oil that produces most of our gas (petrol for cars that is) is home produced, from our North Sea Oilfields as they produce a light crude that's particularly suited to gas production. The rest is all imported.

If the dollar has lost 64 cents to the euro over the last 3 years, wouldn't it somehow make sense that the cost of everything we compete for on the world market would cost a lot more?

If the import car manufacturers weren't adjusting the cost of their cars here a car built in Europe or Japan would have to cost 30% more too.

When the "real" price of things other than fuel hits us, it will be interesting to see how well big corporate exporting of jobs offshore will effect our economy.

Many importers are looking to the USA for the location of their next factories because their costs are lower here now than at home.

We exist is a world wide economy.  That's why protectionism measures usually fail miserably on a long term basis.

Inflation in food prices has already begun.  Manufacturers absorb as much as they can initially, but these costs (fuel, energy, corn, etc.) will be passed along.  Higher inflation (from a historical perspective say 8-10%) is possible, depending upon interest rates and.... consumer spending.

If even some of the stats commonly put out are close to accurate you've got it tougher ahead sooner then we do to.  I saved a "Guardian" article from a few years ago that made a lot of noise saying:

"UK gets 32% of its electricity from coal, 23% from nuclear38% from gas and 4% from oil.  By 2020, only one of the present nuclear plants will be operating and both Norway and the UK will be out of natural gas"

It's no wonder the Government is looking at nuclear again.  The North Sea fields are beginning to wind down.  No new discoveries are on the regional horizon it seems.  All that has to make someone feel all warm and fuzzy about the atom.

Yes, you've hit the nail right on the head, Don. Already much of our natural gas (we don't mains gas here, hence the propane bottles) is from Russia, as North Sea gas is running out, and the oil is winding down. Our coal industry - once one of the main industries in Scotland is dead and gone (same story in Wales, where it was big too), so the coal fired power stations are burning imported coal too. In Scotland at least we have a degree of Hydro Electricity, but energy wise, dire times lie ahead.  Not sure I'd like the world my kids will see when they are the age I am now - thankfully, I'll be gone.
