Custom Bling
« on: April 10, 2008, 02:24:37 PM »

The "103" stuff on Thumper is starting to bother me, since she isn't a 103 anymore.  Faux point cover went away with the installation of the R&R cam plate and cover. Today I ordered a billet derby cover to replace the stock derby cover.  The horn cover is easy enough:  heat gun to loosen the adhesive and peel the "103" medallion off.  The question to which I'm struggling to find an answer is:  How do I correct the Air Wing air cleaner cover?  All the replacement medallions available through HD do not apply since they're either "88", "95", "110", "EVO", or some theme which doesn't match my motorcycle.  So, now I'm thinking custom..........as in removing the "103" medallion from the bolt cover, and.............now what?  HELP?

Working on it, Neal.  Had to email it to myself from my iPod.  Work computer is the only one with me this trip.

Here you go.  Getting the 103 medallion off the bolt cover is easy.  Making the bolt cover look decent is the tuff part.  It is rough machined Au alloy.  No chrome.

Possible air cleaner cover change if I can't make this work.

Henry,
I just googled Harley-Davidson Custom Horn Covers and it came back w/several vendors that have custom covers but none of what you're looking for. It might be worth saving the piece you take off and contacting one of them to see if they can make you a custom piece in the same size/dimension of what you took off. :nixweiss:

No doubt, but I think that would "overdoit," since my personalized tag bears that name.  I've considered removing the "103" medallion and taking the slug (bolt cover) to a machinist, and having a new piece milled superfine and simply.........chromed.  Problem there is getting the chrome to match.  Some chrome hues are gold, while others are blue.  The slug is countersunk to accept a "stick-on" medallion, and from my viewpoint, would look terrible without a fill in the void.  Not sure what I'm going to do at this point but think about it and be grateful for the advice I receive.  Thanks, Neal.

Yep.  Saw that last June and am once again in awe.  My desire is on a much smaller scale though.  The wheels are turning though.  Keep 'em coming.  Thanks, folks.

Thanks Jim!!!  THAT will work!!!!!  Only problem is my stock insert is different, but I'll bet there's one that matches the billet derby cover I just ordered.

Does it fit flush to the surface of the air wing cover?
