Question on 1000 mile service
« on: April 13, 2008, 01:21:45 PM »

Greetings....I just bought all my supplies to do the 1000 mile service on my CUSE2, and I noticed in my owners manual on page 121 the following statement -- " NOTE -- The performance of new motorcycle initial service is required to keep your new motorcycle warranty in force and to assure proper emissions system operation.  Refer to table 29.  After a new motorcycle has been ridden its first 1000 miles, it should be taken to an authorized HD dealer for initial service operations."

The obvious question....has everyone taken their bike into the dealer for the 1000 mile service in order to dodge voiding the warranty, or are they just trying to get me back into the dealer to spend money, or maybe it really is the best thing to do?  Many thanks for your thoughts!

Absolutely not. If you are capable and motivated to do it yourself, go ahead and do it. Note it being done in the service manual and go for it. :2vrolijk_21:

The operative word is 'should' be taked to H-D dealer, not 'must' be taken there.  If the latter were required then they would have to provide the service at no charge as per the Moss Manguson federal warranty law.  If you perform the service according to the requirements then you are OK.  As Chief said, keep the receipts and log it in.

I could be wrong (have been before!) but I just cannot understand what the big deal is with the initial 1k service other than changing the fluids - that is the big deal as far as I can tell.  If the dealer did a halfway decent job of PDI on the bike then there should not be much that needs attention except for maybe drive belt adjustment since it may stretch a little bit when new.  I've done all my own services on my jester and only used dealer for warranty repairs, tire changes, etc.

If you check critical fasteners, change your oil/filter, and check your belt tension, you're probably doing more than would get done at the dealership anyway, so go for it and log it in the book.

Terry is right.  Alot of what they do is a pencil whip.  If you do it, then you know it will get done..........and get done right.  Way back when, I had a dealer tell me they prefer customers bring their motorcycles to them for the 1K service because everyone who had done it themselves freaked out over the fuzz on the engine, transmission, and primary magnets....... ;D

doing it yourself is good and keeps you "in touch with your bike" if you do everything ,fallow the book and there should be on problem and if there is we'll all be right here. good luck

Just completed the service today, and everything went well.  I would like to find a way to keep oil from getting everywhere when I change the oil filter though.  Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Afterwards, in your spare time, you can cure the common cold, cure baldness, invent a weight loss pill and keep the 110's from leaking oil!

Some have used a plastic bag around the filter when removing. Just use caution when doing this to make sure the motor isn't to hot to melt the plastic. Loosen the filter some to break the seal, but before it starts to leak put the bag over the filter and slide it up enough to cover the housing. Then remove the filter and let it fall in the bag, but leave the bag around the housing to catch the residual. Once you notice that the oil has stopped dripping you can remove the bag w/filter in it, and throw them away. Hope that helps keeping some of the mess down.

Try this from Drag Specialties http://www.dragspecialties.com/fatbook/20/142/5925991
I have one and it works great. Just go slow when you put it on
