tankbags
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:27:57 PM »

Know this has been discussed here before, but can't find it.Has anyone used a magnetic tank bag??Can't find one that fits over the dash well enough so the magnets lay flat on the tank.Want it to carry my camera so I can get at it without getting off the bike.
        Thanks,Jim

I'll take a picture later.
This is exactly what I found to be useful last year during my trip down south.

I almost missed this picture, between stopping, getting off the bike, getting the camera bag out of the saddlebag and then getting the camera out of the bag! By that time the bird was a good distance away.

The next day I found a great little bag that sits on the tank and holds an almost SLR sized camera. Used it for the next 8 days without any problems

Bought one made by Daytona Gear (www.daytonagear.com) during a dealer sale about a year ago, a few friends warned me after getting it that no matter how careful I was the friction between the leather and the tank would scar the finish. So like so many impulse accessories, it sits in the storeroom.

Porthole,do you know the make & model of the bag you have? Did your tank suffer from using it for 8 days? I know it's a concern that the paint will be marked, but I only figure on using it for part of an upcoming trip.Hopefully if I'm carefull & use lots  of wax I can get away with it.Thanks for the comeback.

I realize you're asking about tankbags, but have you considered either of the fairing pouches...

Jim
I bought this bag at Deals Gap, halfway through our trip. It was the best thing I got during the trip next to the really good deal on a helmet at Ghost Town HD.

It is a SBW Concepts "mini tank bag"
http://www.sbwconcepts.com/bag.html

The magnets are in a pocket and can be removed and just straps used. Personally, I think using straps on a painted surface will scratch the paint (bag moving around).

My tank was clean when I put the bag on and I used it for over 1500 miles, taking it on and off throughout the next 4-5 days.

Wasn't cheap, I think I paid about $50 for it.
I never regretted it.
The bag will hold my camera, cell phone and a granola bar or two, kept my debit card in there too and kept my wallet buried in the tourpak.

There are no scratches on my tank from the bag.

I know it looks a little fugly, but is was function over form that I wanted  :2vrolijk_21:

Two d-rings for straps.

The bag is also expandable (like a suitcase).

The top will "open" up another 4" or so.

I only use this for my camera, and only if I feel the need to keep it readily available.
For my "normal" excursions I'll usually keep a small camera in my pocket.
But for those special moment I like having the big lens.

Got a 3 pocket windshield pouch now that works good for my pocket camera, but want a little more camera for a trip to the west coast this year.Thought I'd make sure I could find a place for it before I bought the camera.

After seeing Duane's (Porthole's) bag/camera I was thinking you might have something similar. Seems like what he has will be what you need. :2vrolijk_21:

I have the same tank bag as Porthole.  I bought several years and motorcycles ago, and have used it many times with no damage to the tank.  On long trips I don't like sitting on my wallet all day.  I use this bag to carry my wallet, keys, phone and most importantly, a Glock .40 fits in there real nice.  When I stop for food or a rest stop, I just pull the tank bag off and it has everything I need in it.
