leaks
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:47:32 AM »

:I have only 1500 miles on my 110 and am wondering how many of you haven't had any oil leak problems or is it a given that I will be seeing one at some point soon. I find that people tend to speak up when there is a problem but do not say anything if all is well.

Hi Bigdog. I just posted a thread yesterday under twin cam. I have just over 1500 miles, 2480 Km. I found an oil leak last night. Have not talked to the dealership yet. Not too happy either. They kept telling me not to believe anything I read online. I was hoping to be one of the lucky few to escape the problems, but it does not look like it.

I think that is the mantra they all learn at the moco indoctrination meeting.

BigDog,

I'm hoping your bike is troublefree as not all 110's develop leaks. Many riders on this site are leak free. It is very hard to get an actual percentage, but you may be one of the leak free ones.

Unfortunately, the Ultras have a higher failure rate than the RoadKings and the Dynas and Softails do even better that the RKs.

So, don't get depressed or anxious about the leaks if you are affected. There are a lot of good people here that have experienced them and have made the best of it. Mine's been fixed once, but is currently leaking. If it doesn't get much worse, I'll wait to fix it this Fall.

It is a Harley and it leaks but it still runs and is fun to ride. It could be worse.

Good luck,

Bigdog,
I hope you don't have any problems.  I thought I was one of the fortunate ones and not having and leak problems...well, today I took my SEUC down to the dealership to have new head gaskets installed.  Supposedly, they are getting the latest and greatest "B" version gaskets tomorrow.  I told them to check the rocker boxes for clearance and the cylinder liners to see if they have shifted some.  He said you've been reading online again, haven't you?  I said yep.  He said that can be dangerous.  I said, I know, for you guys, because I know from talking to people that have had personal experience as to what the problems are that are showing up in the 110's not the denial from the MoCo that there's no problems with the engine.  He just looked at me a smiled.  Considering that there isn't supposedly any problems with the 110, they sure were quick to order the gaskets before they even looked at the bike....but then again they haven't heard of any problems with the 110 leaking... :-X

Big Dog,
Contact MOCO in Milwaukee and create a Ticket(Ref#) with them and then go to your dealer with that info. Just a helpful hint on the SEUC Get Rid of your Lowers to allow better air flow over that rear cylinder. The RK's don't have them so they get better air flow. That is why the SEUC are effected more. This is only with this lovely 110 motor though. 8)

Big dog,
You shouldn't have any leaking whatsoever. For what you paid either troubleshoot and fix or take it back and have it fixed. I have 14000 troublefree miles on my 2004 FXSTDSE2 and no leaking whatsoever. The old adage of "Harley marks its spot" is long gone.

Please don't overlook "venting" as they aren't considered leaks.
Good Luck

and Bigdog - don't believe that RK's don't do the leaky thing. Mine's just come back from the Dealers today with two new composite gaskets, liners checked and valves checked for clearance.

No complaints with the Dealers mind - I took it in, they did the work and they delivered the bike back to me.

Lets just hope the oil stays where it's supposed to be from now on in.

Kind of easy on the newbie, Howie, although I did read a lot of attitude there buddy.  Nice weather is finally here in Mass.  It's not global warming, it's spring or they opened the dome at the state house.

I have 1200 miles on mine.  I had almost 5 months wait and watched all the issues here and still bought, so I'm certianly hoping I'm not going to have any problems.

Wenchel,
Make sure you get your lowers off so that motor or should I say rear cylinder can get all the air it can. Put a Race Tuner on it and fatten it up plus add different pipes. It really helps cool it down. I still got the leak but waited to long on removing the lowers in hot weather here in AZ so the leak came sooner.

Lowers will come off, probalby next month and more than likely will never go back on...I did V&H True Duals with Ovals and had SERT / dyno last week.  Hopeing that helps.  I've never had a race tuner / dyno on a bike before.  After the dyno it is scary fast.
