Need 6 Speed Advice
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:38:18 PM »

The Baker DD6 on Elvis has completely spoiled me rotten and I've decided it is past time to get one for the Nana. Talked to Baker this afternoon, they told me to order the builder's kit as it comes complete ready to fit in my case. I understand the HD 6 speed requires the new case.
What can you suggest, am I understanding this correctly?

MJ, the HD six speed "kit" installs in the original case.  Have to do just a bit of clearancing.  It's all documented though.

And I've seen a video of the "grinding" seems pretty straight forward. Bolt a template on, follow the template, take the template off.

You have to grind away the boss for the top middle bolt (at least I think it was the top middle  :nixweiss: )

So do you think all things being equal between them, should cost be the only determining factor? Baker seems to be a few hundred more.

Thanks guys.

Baker has a better shift drum and forks, but not sure that its worth the few hundred more for normal street riding, I have installed a couple of the HD 6s one I had to cut a little the other went in with no cutting.

Which Baker are you looking at, the DD6 or the OD6?  The DD6 will cost more because you get a new engine sprocket and primary chain along with the trans parts.

DD6, the Baker tech told that was my only real choice. He did not recomend the OD6 for a SEEG.

I went with the HD 6 speed a few years back. It is an OD unit. In 6th gear it drops the rpm's about 400 or so. The install was very easy. Yes you have to do a little grinding to do on the case but it is really no big deal. For the savings of a couple hunderd bucks I would go with the HD unit. Oh and BTW the HD 6 speeds are made by Jims.

MJZ, I would go with the HD Screamin' Eagle 6 speed Gear Set over the Baker DD6.  You will have a lot less problems  The Harley SE 6 speed has a better warranty and you can go to any Harley shop to have it worked on if you have a problem.  The Baker DD6 tends to cause problems with the dog ear and shift shaft.  You then have a wait for replacement parts from Baker.  Stick with the Harley Screamin' Eagle :xyxthumbs:

Don't change at all......it's not worth the money BUT IF YOU MUST.....

Baker- have one- you change the comp set up with theirs. 28 tooth and a special chain size.....you can't lower the comp sprocket size if you want to later

Harley- have one- made by Jims...you have to grind the case and once you do you can't go back to the 5 speed if you sell the bike or some other reason...you can change the comp with a 24-37 if you want to change the primary ratio later.

Still wouldn't do it. You end up dropping the rpm's at cruise and shift too early causing more wear and tear on the motor that good. You should only use it going over 2800 rpm's. Now you have to decide if You  really want to spend that much money :2vrolijk_21:

Wow! I did the HD 6 speed and can't stand to ride a bike without it. I do agree that you should only spend the money if you intend to do a lot of highway miles.

I really appreciate all your help here. If it were not for Elvis having the Baker DD6 I would not even be considering a six speed but one ride on it and I can't be satisfied with the 5 speed. (This is all BB's fault) I keep looking for another gear around 65 and it bugs the hell out of me.
The HD probably was the best choice going from the input received but I ordered the Baker today. I am so damn happy with Elvis I just didn't want to take the gamble to save a few $$$$$.
Thank everyone for their help on this. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

That's what I'm talkin' bout!!!!
Every time I get on the Nana with the 5 speed I hate it. I've had about 7 months to talk myself out of it and it only works if I stay off of Elvis.
I think you would be right about the highway miles on the HD 6 but the Baker DD6 fires Elvis off like a rocket in 1st. Elvis dynos at about 7 less HP and TQ but it will eat the Nana up in 1st and 2nd. Don't know if it is because of not having the fairing / lowers or if it is the Baker.
