500 Mile Service Done.........need info help
« on: April 14, 2008, 10:15:44 PM »

OK...... here is my problem or maybe no problem !!!!

Bought the 08 Black Diamond new in December for the wife to ride. While she is waiting to learn to ride at the Rider's Safety coarse, I have been riding it to get it broke in. I noticed while riding the bike, the front end was very quiet and pretty much rode like a bike with normal forks.

Took it in and had the 500 mile service done. Since then, there is a "boing" type spring noise on every bump the bike goes over. The noise is coming from the front spring. I went back to the dealer and they said that it is normal. I told them that the bike had no noise before the service. It sounds like a pogo stick !

Is the noise normal? I can't stand to ride it now. I can't understand why there is a night and day difference now.

How does your 08 Ride. Is this normal?

It is not normal to hear a boing. I've had several springers and none made this noise.

I've only rarely ever worked on a Springer front end.  Not nearly enough to have anything dedicated to memory.  To those more intimately familiar:

What might be done (or undone) during a general service and inspection that would create a "boing?"

Mine makes no sounds, and I can't imagine what they could have done to it. Speak to the mechanic.

I have sounds coming from the headlight.  The head light vibrates because it's on a different kind of mount from the previous years, so I've been told.

No boinging is not normal! sounds like a misadjustment to the springs, which is required at 500 miles on the springers. Most dealers have little experience in springer front end adjustments, unless the tech is over 50 or has alot of experience with the springer. Heck my dealer had no clue it was even required, had to show them in the service and owners manual, did my own adjustment and it does not make any noise.

Thanks for the replies...

I know that it's not right. There is no way that the bike is suppose to make this type noise. It's like riding a pogo stick. I'm going to bring the bike back on Thursday. I will let you know the outcome

no911, i agree with blowncobra, springers are not that hard ,  ether you know what your doing or you don't ....talk to the dealer or other and thay get or no .the factory teaches springer adjustments ,that dosant mean that the mechanic has any clue. but alot of us do. hang in there ,a lot fun when it's right. ;)

It's been a long time since I heard a pogo stick, but I don't remember a "boing." I DO remember a "squish" sound and that is also the sound that the springer's shock absorber makes. It's subtle, but it's there. Not to overstate the obvious, but a motorcycle's front suspension, be it telescopic or springer, is a lot like a pogo stick.

mine does not make noise either. just hear the shock once in a while when i hit a bump. But i do have grease leaking out of the bottom bearing at the frame neck-not sure if this is normal on a springer or not-i will ask the dealer when i take it in for the first service. i would think it would have a seal though.

no seal in the neck bearings, soap and water will breakdown the grease .  next time you get near a touring model look at the top of the lower fork clamp.

Yeah do not grease the neck bearings too often on the springers, i know it is temting with that zerk fitting staring at ya every time you walk up to the bike, it will leak out if you do. 1 Squirt a year or every 10k is all that is needed, and DO NOT spray water when washing upward as it will penetrate and take out the bearings just like Axil said no seal
