front axle flush cap - my installer
« on: April 15, 2008, 12:46:55 AM »

I took some pictures while putting the bike back together. This is for the flush axle cap the "Puzzled" has sold to many of us.

I understand the the accepted way is to just use the axle to pull the cap in. I don't care for that method, puts an undue amount of stress on the threaded cap.

My method illustrated below puts the majority of the "twisting" force on a thrust bearing, transferred to the lower leg and not the threads.

I used a "steering wheel puller" bolt (these tend to be a better grade of steel then generic bolts). The wheel puller bolt just happens to be the same size thread as the HD axle.

Also used is a 2" flat washer, thrust bearing and a extra heavy washer above the bearing. The nut from the stock axle your are taking off works great.

These were just parts I had laying around from my former career.

I just think this is a better method to draw down the cap, and it does take some effort.

I had to remove the cap to send out my forks. For that I used the stock HD axle and supported the end of the fork with 2 blocks of wood. Lacking a press the tool of choice was a 3 pound hammer.

Good write up and pictures.  I expected to see one of your dogs after reading the title of the post.   :)  You have a good mechanical mind.   :2vrolijk_21:

You should have seen me trying to slide the fork in with a Golden laying under what is left of the front end!
She is always by my side and sometimes in the way, but that's OK.

This picture is typical when I am in the garage.

Duane, that's just a classic picture. Something like that needs to be framed and hung on the garage wall. :2vrolijk_21:

Molly stands by her man

Yes she does and my wife thinks its pitiful  ;D

BTW, for those that don't remember or never heard her story ................

We do Golden Retriever Rescue (re-home).
Molly was a "shelter dog", whom the County SPCA agent had pulled from the pound due to Molly being in 5 different homes by the time she was 11 months old!

That is not a misprint, five homes in eleven months, and four of those months were in the shelter!

The SPCA agent called us (knowing our history) and asked if we could please just try and give this girl a chance.

We never looked back.
