I just put a Bassani Powercurve Header, Mufflers and a HD Heavy Breather on my 08 SERK and the dealer said I do not need to re-map or change anything does this make sense?

No, none whatsoever. You'll need to get it tuned now. PC or SERT. ;)

Thanks Hoist, I thought so, do you think it will hurt it to run it for a few hundred kilometers before I get it tuned?

BTW TBird, welcome aboard! :2vrolijk_21:

No, but I wouldn't run it at higher revs. You're A/F will be out of control beyond the O2 sensor control. I don't even know whether the ECM can keep up with the preprogrammed 14.7:1 setting while within the O2 sensor control RPM range. But I'd just take it easy on her until you get her tuned. ;)

Hey TBird I"m a newbie too. I also have the Bassani headers on my 03 serk along with Hooker tuned headers. I had to get mine re-mapped then it ran great. When it was re-mapped the muflers were tuned about half way out. Last year I wanted to make a little more noise and opened up the mufflers and that was a mistake it sounded like I popping popcorn so I put em back and it runes fine.I wish I would have opened um up before the 200.00 re-mapping. You wouldn't think that would make that much difference but it did.      Hossdog            I haven't managed to get any pics on here yet so you don't need to make fun of me somebody already has. :(

Well first off, your dealer sucks for telling you that. Get a new dealer now.
He is dead wrong. I hate dealers that don't know anything about what
they sell.

Second, Get it tuned now (as Howie said). Power Commander or SERT,
both good options. It is important to have air/fuel ratio right. After all
you don't want added heat or blue pipes do you?  JMHO.

Welcome.

If I am not mistaken, the actual box that the heavy breather comes in addresses this issue. I don't remember exactly, but something like "Recalibration is required for proper installation...allowing higher engine RPM's". Then the all important mention about additional labor costs.

See, it's in the best interest of the dealership to READ ABOUT THE PRODUCT before dispensing service and product advice. There's more to sell. Which is why the dealer wants to read these directions written on the box and more than likely, right in the Harley Catalog too.

I think motorcycle dealers who talk without knowledge are as dangerous as a downtown street gangster with a loaded AK that just ran out of crack.

Well, you get my point. You know all of those "death and danger" warning messages in the owners manual and included in every product installation page that HD sells? There is a reason for it; and the dealers don't always comprehend this.

As wisely stated: get it tuned as soon as possible. You won't regret it.

Tbird, I agree with every one else.  Tuning will be required.  However, with both the PCIII and the SERT you can get canned maps from both that will get you real close if you are trying to avoid the $$$ of a dynotune.  After all, our bikes aren't individually dynotuned at the factory.  They are sent to us with canned maps.

Thanks guys, great info, I was back at the dealer yesterday and he said that there is no mapping for the 110 for these changes. He also said that a SERT is not necessary.

Find you another dealer. Evidently he doesn't have anyone that can create/tune your bike to a custom map using the SERT/PCIII, and he's just installing canned maps. Also I believe he's wrong in his statement that there are not any canned maps for these bikes. :nixweiss:

Are you kidding me?  A dealer that isn't willing to sell you an SERT and dyno time.   :confused5:

Around here in the Los Angeles area, there are more dealers who shun SERT sales or Dyno time because they don't have a tuner. The dealer closest to me just this year started installing SERT's yet do not have a dyno nor a recommendation to turn to. Most of the tuners are with performance shops, and don't give a hoot about your warranty. The dealers try to sway customers towards canned maps downloaded from corporate sources or from trusted map makers.

Of course, this does not apply to the larger than life HD dealers in Marina Del Rey and Lancaster for example. These guys are out of the way, but worth the venture cause they can tune what they sell and do it with a passion.

Is it different on the Right Coast?

The three dealers I've spoken with about dynotuning all can do it but it seems to be reluctantly.  One tuner told me that with PCIII there are so many downloadable maps available for different set ups that it doesn't make sense to "reinvent the wheel".

Mike,
Stop by Bartells and ask for Lew Berg. Last I knew he was the Parts Manager. He'll talk straight with you. Tell him Big Brian from San Diego suggested you speak with him
