Gear Driven Cams on 08 SEUC
« on: April 18, 2008, 05:03:11 PM »

My question to the forum is I am taking the bike in this coming Monday for the rear cylinder oil leak. I am wanting to know if switching over to gear cam tensioners(screaming Eagle) is a way to go? I was wanting them to do this and hope they check the runout on the old cam and inform me if it was within spec's. If not then the motor should be warranted with Moco. It the cam is within runout then I would like to switch over from the chain cam tensioners.Staying with the screaming eagle cam gear tensioners would not void my warranty. Is there anything else at that time I should do since they are into it? Is there any better performance?

Whoa there DB! First off, HD doesn't make gear drive. And I wouldn't think about using Andrews/S&S gear drive cams with stock flywheels at all. Plus the '06Dyna/'07/'08 cam chain tensioner design is a good design. Either get better flywheels to use a gear drive, or just get the chain drive cams you want.

Sounds like you've been fed the BS sandwich. As far as I know the MoCo (Screamin' Eagle) doesn't offer gear drive cams for TC motors.

That would be correct. SE does not have any Gear drive cams. For the 08 as others as stated use a chain drive setup. It is much better than the previous chain drive with hydrolic tensioners. Andrews, S&S, Wood and others make cams for the new(er) chain drives. Are you looking for a "bolt -in" cam or are you going to do any other head work?

I've asked H-D engineers about this in Daytona and Sturgis at the Harley Expo or whatever they call it. I get answers like " well it would add to the overall noise factor of the bike and we're trying to quiet the engine so we can give people that Harley sound they expect "  and also " the set-up on gear drive cams is labor intensive and does not lend itself to production line techinques "  Anybody want to tackle those answers with a rebuttal ?

The noise factor is a big concern for HD. They are only allowed a specific DB at idle and at given RPM's and drive by speeds by Federal regs. (I don't have the specifics limit #'s). If they quiet the motor down (mechanically) then that leaves more sound for exhaust. Gear cams are (or can be) noisier than the chain setup due to the added mechanical contact of the gears. There are thise that will argue that a properly set up gear drive will run just as quiet as the chain system. As far as setup time and production line I would have to agree as the gear drive sets do take longer to install and setup and verify proper fitment.

On the other hand HD would have to make cranks that run to within .003" runout to use the gears so I think we all know that that is the real answer.....

You got it right Jim, more of H-D's BS.
I think this is one of those times where my hearing impairment allows me to make a better judgement than people who hear well. Beagle, Hank and Bubba_T all have gear drive cams and they are soooooooo much quieter than the chain driven Screamin Eagle cams in LD. I really don't buy the noise argument. Especially at idle. I do hear some whine in the gear drive cams at speed, but their quite as a church mouse at idle.

Well what ever I could do with changing out the chain driven cams I need to stay with Harley(SE) parts to keep my bike within warrenty. From what I am hearig hear there is no up grade to the chain driven.  8) 8)

Sorry DESERTBEAR54, but this post is off in a bunch of ways. 1st off, if you use any stoplight or crossed flag noted parts your warranty is toast. The catch there is the parts that aren't stoplight or crossed flags don't gain you much. HOWEVER, there are a bunch of Screamin Eagle cams that make good power. I know, I have a set in LD and it's a runner for sure. Thought I had a sleeper but the Hawkeyes on this site picked up on the compression releases when I posted some pics. You can build a hell of a motor from the Screamin Eagle catalogue, but as previously noted, your warranty isn't good for much except the bottom of a birdcage once you do.

Thanks Spiderman!! I guess I will leave it alone at this time. I was willing to spend $1500.00 bucks to inhance the motor but I am not sure which direction to go and keep it in warreny. 8) 8)

Desertbear,
It's up to you to not put gear drive cams in your bike, but I thought I remembered you posting you had added the SERT to your bike (along w/some other mods, pipes, and oil other then Syn 3). As Spiderman mentioned about the crossed flags (the SERT has the crossed flags) your warranty may be a mute point now if they wanted to really screw you. :nixweiss: Best thing to do is get/maintain a relationship w/the dealer doing the work on your bike and see if they will back the parts/install. I've done this w/the dealer that I have had install performance parts on my bike and never worried about warranty. Good luck in whatever you decide. :2vrolijk_21:

The noise argument is actually true.  The reason in '07 that the se ultra had the oval air cleaner cover and the se rk had the round cover was noise reflected back from the lowers on the ultra and no lowers on the road king.

I believe that a PROPERLY built engine will be quieter than the stock POS 110! My new custom built 110 sans any HD parts, with gear drive cams, is markedly quieter than my stock POS ever was!!! ;)

Dealer installed SERT and Reinhart Slip -On's at the 500 mile check. At that time they stated to me my factory warranty was not violated because the SERT was an HD product designed for there bikes and that they had specific mapping for the 08 SEUC. The slip-on's were also approved because I was not changing the Y crossover and that is what the motor was designed with. As with the Ams Oil vs Syn 3 I with the support of everone on this site plus the laws found out I am totally legal. As with anything with HD things change weekly so when we get into the nity gritty of things we will see where we stand.
