Sticking Throttle
« on: April 21, 2008, 08:51:24 AM »

I was driving this weekend, and the throttle started skicking on my FLHTCUSE3.  The hand grip is hard to turn, and sticks sometimes.  Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks

Fly by wire or cable throttle?  If it's a cable I've had problems that was the cruise module ribbon binding.

I have not coming up on 800 miles and throttle has been very good-actually i have to remind myself that it is electronic.

It is Fly by Wire.  I don't believe it is an electronics issue, because the grip itself is sticking.

My '08 SE Ultra is in for it's 1000 mile service.  Its throttle also sticks in the open position.  When I release my hand, it stays open and does not close.  However, it is easy to close manually.  It is not an electronics issue.  I was reluctant to complain about it, because I actually like having it stay open when I lift my right hand, but I guess it's a safety issue, so I told the service department.

Mine also started doing this prior to the 1000 miles service.  Which only took about a week and a half to get to.  It was fixed at the service and has not happened since.  I'm at 8000 miles now.  Not sure what it was but it didn't take any parts.

Ride Safe,

It is Fly by Wire.  I don't believe it is an electronics issue, because the grip itself is sticking.

Mine is actually quite the opposite. It is very light to the touch. When I use the cruise control, the slightest touch to the grip will disengage the cruise control. I have given up on the cc, never liked it too much anyways.

Ride safely,

The first morning after getting my SEUC3 when I stared it it idled at 3000 rpm I thought it was just warming up but it did not slow down. I could roll off the throttle manually back to 1000 rpm. Called the dealer this is an easy fix just turn key on and off 4 times and let the engine light go off each time and it should idle when in the rest position.Seems the computer adjusts idle to where it should be

I had the same thing happen. I loosened the switch housing that holds throttle handle in and brushed a small amount of never seize onto the rib on the throttle handle that rests in the switch housing. Tightened everything back up and 2K later, no problems.

I have the exact same problem on my 08SEUC.  Throttle is sticking and I can feel some drag.  It is definately not a reset problem that can be cured by the ignition sequence.  There is some horizontal movement in the grip and, when I push the grip inward, the friction disappears. I also notice that when the heated grips are on high the horizontal movement disappears and the throttle quits sticking.  I am taking mine in for warranty service.

Louis, if the throttle control system is misbehaving in any way; or you think it might be, think strongly about getting it looked at.  Quirks could be precursors of larger problems.  And the new throttle system has not been trouble free.  Engine speed control is not something you want suddenly making decisions for you going down the road or while trying to slow down.

Good point Don-whatever became of that fatakity that was initially getting blamed on a throttle issue-anyone heard anything?

I never got that story more than second hand and never could document.  But do know first hand of two bikes that had quirks.  Idle speed not fully returning to idle when clutch pulled coming to stop or similar circumstances.  One scraped a fender and the other came away clean (except for the shorts).  So they're having at least some glitches.

There is also at least one other and separate problem that is happening often enough it's starting to get some chatter.  Shut the bike off.  It won't restart.

Seems the ECM logs the throttle position when you kill it.  If you happen to be leaning on the grip a bit and have it off the 0 position when you turn off the switch it can cause a problem.  It'll be at 0 when go to restart and the difference between the two will cause it not to start sometimes.

If you know what's going on the fix is apparently simple enough.  With the switches on quickly snap the throttle back and forth.  Turn the switch back off and back on.  Then off you go.  Saw this happen to an 08 FLHX at the dyno shop last weekend.  Dyno guy said he's had it happen three times now.  He's plugged in to Harley tech and they'd told him about it after he saw it the first time and supplied the response.

That story was a thread here and generated alot of chatter-happened down south somewhere if memory serves me-throttle stuck entering a turn? Any how there was alot of discussion about the "kill" switch in that thread.
