Need help diagnosing 103
« on: April 21, 2008, 06:37:54 PM »

When I bought my SEEG (new in 04) I did the mandatory stage 1 air cleaner, supertrapp slipons and PC upgrades. My dyno results at the time were 69 hp and 73 torque...pretty weak. My upgrade this winter was basically to the "103 CI High Output" specs in the screaming eagle catalog. I changed to the MCR Performance Heads, 258 cam...and the associated changes (e.g. adjustable pushrods, compression releases, install kit, etc.).  I now have a 75 hp engine. What is wrong here?  Leak down test o.k. However, the compression is around 120 instead of 160.  My HD dealership did all the work, they went through it again and didn't find anything. They are treating me right but they don't understand what the problem is...and are following up with HD. However, any ideas from the experience on the board would certainly be welcome.  Thanks.

All I can say is good luck! I would have done a different package. It sure would of had a set of gear drives in it. What fuel management system did they use?

power commander...I know it isn't the optimal package but I have 3 years left on the warranty and therefore decided to stay within HD stuff. And the package can't be as poor an outcome as I am getting, nor should it have been so poor to begin with.

I don't know what kind of compression that combination of cams/heads/pistons should produce, but 120 is not much.  Makes me wonder if your rings didn't seat.  If they overheat on break in, the rings will "microweld" and not seal - and will not produce much power.  Might want to do a leak test... :nixweiss:

I had that thought (as well as values not seating properly) but, as I mentioned in the summary,  the results of the leak down test were fine.

Even if it was before you'd like to believe someone fixed that whey they changed the cam.  It was my thought too though.

sorry, but can you explain what checking "to see if it is sumping" means? I don't know that one. Also, if it is related to oil, I had the new cam plate and fueling oil pump put in as well. Thanks...kr

The head mechanic thought maybe the cam wasn't aligned right so he went back in himself to check...and actually to also switch to a 251. He is sure its aligned and the result was no difference in output. kr

The Jester Wisperer has a way with words that is strange & mysterious.

If your bike was sumping, most likely it would be blowing oil out the breather - but not always.  Not a bad guess as to the problem.

Ok, that was the second spewage of the evening.  Bastard!

Wet sumping is easy enough to understand.  Almost too simply think of it like this.  There are places oil should be. And places it shouldn't.  The pump's pumping and scavening help control both.

One place oil shouldn't be in huge volume is directly beneath the pistons.  It takes a lot of the engine's work to bring them back down through a huge slug of oil.  Power to do that is power robbed from the rear wheels.  There are oil pump related problems that can lead to wet sumping.
