Peeling Screen
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:43:42 AM »

On Saturday, Anne and I took a ride to the Cape (Cod).  Before leaving I installed my 2730 GPS and noticed a small spot on the screen.  i gently went to wipe it off and the whole layer started peeling off!  Garmin says it will be $225 to repair...and since it has been two years, I really should update my map software.  Well, with the trip to Sedona coming up fast, I used this as the opportunity to justify the purchase of the ZUMO to Anne.

I ordered one from PC Nation Monday Morning and had it by nonn on Tuesday.

I will be sticking with the stock mount for now and have it installed and ready for Sedona.

I was actually going to buy the ZUMO anyway and give Anne the 2730...now I have to decide if it is worth repairing or just get her something like the Streetpilot C340 which would cost less than the repair.

If I get a ZUMO having not had a portable GPS for the other bike, what accessories do I need or want?

Roger here you go (Bill you might find some of this info helpful to)...

Check out this thread - Standard GPS or Garmin - implementation starting at reply #11. You will find a list of all the parts that others and myself have used. I ordered my Techmount from them directly, used the Radio Shack power plug (but will replace it w/the one Terry found if ever needed), and I also got a cover to put on the face of the Zumo to prevent scratches from - Invisible Shield for the Garmin Zumo 550. Also check out this post - Zumo Tips/Tricks... this is a nice replacement security screw for the mount. The one that comes stock has this special screw/screwdriver that is a pain in the butt for us old guys. It is really small and hard to see. Both of the above threads have good information on parts, installation and tips/tricks for the Zumo.

Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars)

SOUND PROFESSIONALS - GOLD PLATED 3.5MM (1/8 INCH) RIGHT ANGLE STEREO PATCH CABLE (1 meter length)

Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (Plug Only)

The only other thing I did was went to a local fastener store w/the screws that hold the Zumo mount to the Techmount and got some shorter screws. You can see the difference in these two posts - stock screws and short screws.

Once you get the unit make sure you go to the following places to update and register your Zumo.

Product Registration

Web Updater (This will allow you to make sure your Zumo has the latest firmware)

MapSource software version 6.13.7 as of February 27, 2008 . Don't try to use the update feature in the Mapsource program because it will not work. You will have to go directly to the previous link download it and then install. Note: You will have to do this w/all Mapsource updates.

If you are going to be interested in loading POI's (Points Of Interest) you'll need this also - POI Loader for Windows software version 2.5.2 as of March 28, 2008.

Bill I noticed in another thread you mentioned using your 4GB SD card in the Zumo. If you are planning on using it for MP3's on your trip to Sedona at least get the audio patch cord that I mentioned in my post. Otherwise you will not have any way of listening to music (motorcycle mount has no speaker), or hear turn by turn navigation prompts.

You can't be using that crappy Zumo mount when Techmount has a beautiful chrome handlebar munt Rog! :nixweiss:

Already have the patch cord from my 2730 use.  So all set there.

I think it will be quite distracting to run a slide show of Nelson GTG pictures while riding but cool!

I'm on the WFP plan for post Sedona install of trinkets.  Maybe I'll go to the d00d "hinge plan" on the mount.  It won't be on the bike that much :huepfenlol2:

That's not going to work Roger..... The mount can be seen at all times, and it stays on the bike at all times. Even I couldn't have that not chromed. ;) ;D

Oh man, I can tell I'm a Garmin virgin.  Lots to learn and no time to learn it.

Charging battery now and heading down to the HD shop for a few minutes.

Looking forward to learning the Garmin techniques.

PC Nation pulled through with overnight delivery.  What did we do before the internet?
