Headlight Wattage Opinion Question...
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:59:14 PM »

I'm on an '05 SEEG. (very red=very fast  ;) )  In the stock headlight assy I had the fancy blue PIAA 9004 light at 85/95 watts...  Lots of light, really nice, no probs with heat.  So... never one to leave well enough alone (very red=just like 2lr), I just put in the dual halogen bulb head light.  Should be even better! right?      (not so much...     :-[    )   I think I've seen this dual buld deal on the v-rods and on the RK's and a few others...

It has two bulbs, one H-7 and one H-11.  They are 35w for the high beam and 55 for the low beam.  (and  I don't remember which of the H-7 or H-11 is the hi or low beam).   So I'd like to step up the wattage a bit, but how much?

How much wattage can I go with to increase this assy's rather meager light production without causing those dreaded "other" problems? (like melting and the such...)  Has anybody else done these dual bulbs with higher wattage bulbs successfully?

I like the pattern, but it just isn't very bright....

HID Baby! That's the only way to go to get more light. Puts halogen to shame!!

I agree, HID is the way to go.  My Road Glide had dual headlights and that was not bad.  A single headlight is just not going to cut it if it is not a HID light.  Supposedly they are very long lasting too, so I have less concern of my single headlight burning out on some twisty back road some night.

I have the Harley HID and it is probably not as good as the dual HID systems, but the HID brightly covers the road from edge to edge and is very visible due to the blue color.  On low beams I have my quartz spot lights and my HID low beam, on high beam I have a narrow quartz beam shining out and the HID remains lit.  Either way it is a 2 color combo that people seem to really notice  because they are not quite sure what is coming at them!

I just put in a dual HID kit and it is the best thing I think I've ever done. Did I mention this thing is bright 8). Got it at gothidkit.com for under 150.00 had it 9 months and still working great. It uses less wattage than a stock light.

I just went aqt looked at the Hid Kit stuff...  looks a little tooo good to be true.  But cheap!   I may have to try this out....   I like the designer colors...  kinda cool.

I think I'll run two hid bulbs in the dual beam halogen mount I have now and we'll see how THAT looks!   :o

hmmm....  interesting reading...
http://dsl.torque.net/images/techdocs/NHTSA_Crackdown.jpg

and Daniel Stern Lighting had some VERY interesting words to share at ...

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html

I think I'll regroup...

BTW, the diff between H8 and H1 1is the optical difference from arc to base.  Basically the height of the actual light production...   they fit each others holes, but it throw off the optics and the pattern...

Be careful Shannon.  Lots of bulbs at there with VERY deceptive advertising.  Things like "HID color" or other bull that are not HID bulbs.  Any HID upgrade will not be just a bulb.  That'll be one way to tell.  It'll be a bulb and an ignitor/ballast package of some kind.

Some of the extra electronics are a bit large for our application.  One that has worked well is the digital kit from this place: http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1344

The dual H9 kit is $439 there.  HD-Dude is a dealer for less $$$.

The dual bulb headlight housing you tried sucks.  Like rocks in space.  All outgassing with no light.  I was blind with the damned thing.  Tried bigger/badder/brighter bulbs.  It was terrible.  Couldn't run off the interstate at night because at least on the interstate cars behind had lights that shot out farther than mine did even if I was in front.  On small roads I'd outrun the light and be blind in corners.  It's dangerously bad.

The HID thing is great.  An absolute safety upgrade.  Not cheap.  But if you ride much at night it'll save your ass sometime.  It's also easy to install.

The kit I installed is HID in high and low beam. and if you get the 4000 or 6000  bulb it's leagel (here in NH) the higher number colored bulbs are not. And the colored bulbs are not as bright, I first got the 8000 and it looked cool(blue light) but not that bright. I then switched to the 6000 and it is much brighter and less blue color. The higher kalven # = more blue less lumens, the lower kalven=less blue higher lumens. just my .02    Derek

I think I might be convinced to go the dual bulb like yous Don.

I put the HID in and I am not happy with it.

The pattern is way to high, it lights up the interstate overhead sign so bright that they take away your night vision.

And the high bean is not really a  -------------- rather a solenoid just moves the bulb back in the the housing a bit. It actually makes the light pattern less usable.

Now I just leave it on low and wired the spots to be on all the time.

Hey Porthole,,
go take a look at the tags i left a few posts back to Daniel Stern Lighting consultancy..  It explained your troubles and the fix.  I'm ordering my stuff from him...   the prob your having is what I was up against with my monster killer spots, and the weak-kneed headlight, both dual buld halogen, and the single bulb stick with the monster lamp in it..    What the guy says makes a ton of sense, and I wandered around the internet enough today to verify most of what I read from him and he's not pulling any punches, and his prices are real close to perfect...

I have been running one of his headlights for about a year now. One of the best upgrades I have on my bike. I cant out drive it at night.
