Motorcyclist killed in crash on the Dragon
« on: April 29, 2008, 05:33:59 PM »

By Jessica Stith
of The Daily Times Staff

A 21-year-old Maryland man was killed when his motorcycle traveled off of the road and hit a tree on Calderwood Highway Monday night.

Jerrett Andrew Proctor, 21, Brandywine, Md., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper John Pedigo.

Pedigo said Proctor was riding a 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa southbound on the Dragon with a group of family members on motorcycles.

"He came out of a curve and was traveling up the hill and he left the pavement," Pedigo said.

When Proctor's motorcycle left the roadway between mile markers 3 and 4 on the Dragon, the back of the bike struck a tree.

Pedigo said the motorcycle fell 23 feet down an embankment, and Proctor fell 27 feet from the roadway. Proctor landed under a tree that had been cut down.

"He left 230 feet and 7 inches of skid marks," Pedigo said. "Speed was a factor."

According to Suzuki's web site, the Hayabusa is the fastest motorcycle in the world.

Yeah, I'd say excessive speed was involved.   :-\

Poor guy.  I feel bad for his family that had to be there to see that.  I've gone off the side of a road in a sharp turn and it'll never happen again.  Hoist will always be WAY in front of me when we ride.

Hate to hear about the loss, not matter how pointless it was. The greatest majority of these rocket riders don't have the experience, maturity, or skills to ride a racing caliber machine. It's an accident waiting to happen.

In the rider's shorts, probably.  Those bikes are really fast.  Friend has one and drags it.  90 in first, 1/4mile in 2nd.

I want to know who would even insure a 21 yr old on a Hayabusa? I do know also from experience that the Hayabusa doesn't handle the curves nearly as good as the other sport bikes either.

Two more Hyabusas wrecked on the Cherohala about 4 miles from the Dragon the day before the kid from Ma died. Both riders were flown out in critical condition .Seems they were having Hyabusa rally.
High performance bikes and no training = Disaster .

Would have liked to have seen the road sprayed off before that picture was taken.....  That's why I go cautiously through the twisties.  I'll keep my brain INSIDE my helmet that way.

Always a sad read that someone is injured or killed ~ even when their senses did not kick in to not take the turns so fast.
