Navigation for dummies
« on: May 01, 2008, 07:26:46 AM »

Ok, I'm hoping someone here can help.
I have tried getting my Navigation system setup 8 times now and no luck.
The dealer and MOCO have been no help.
Does anyone have instructions for dummies so I can get this thing going?

BaggerDave,

I too tried to use the Navi that came with the bike and really did not like what it provided. When I got an external one (Garmin 378) it made a world of difference to understand and use. The 378 offers many more features and is water proof vs. what is offered on the bike navi.

Hope this helps,

Maybe I can help.  First to set it up you need the three navigation CDs that came with it.  Take disk number one and turn on the bike to accessory while it's parked outside with a clear view of the sky.  With it set to radio mode (Am/Fm/Xm doesn't matter) insert the nav disk 1 into the player and watch the screen.  It should say that's navigation is being activated.  After a few minutes it will prompt you to press OK to accept the warning about not using it while driving.  That's all it takes.  It's now setup.  If it has problems finding the satelites, you may have to take it for a slow ride around the block until it figures out where it is.

Once it's setup remember that you need the disk in to enter a location and find a route.  Once the route is calculated the directions say you can take it out during the ride... BULLCHIT.  You need it in if you miss a turn, or want to use the find Gas, Food, Lodging etc. feature.  Sense switching disks while you're lost and just missed a turn sucks you're better off just leaving the dang thing in there for the whole ride.

Hope that helps!

So let me see if I understand...

Anytime you go somewhere, when you decide to use the NAV you need to put the CD in again?

Don't forget you need the CD for the area you're in, so take all three. :nixweiss:

I agree! but it's a functional unit none the less.  When you program it, make sure you're in your own driveway, that way you store the current location as "Home".  The funnest way to use it is taking rides within two hours of your home on roads you never heard of and try to get lost.  Wherever you are you can find restaurants, gas, or HD dealers, and also a way home.

To quote the big fat guy on the sofa... "You are correct sir"... In both your understanding and your feeling on it.

However I think the unit get's a bad rap in some respects.  I don't mind the lack of a map on the display (I'm the only one on this site who feels that way).  I find the map distracting on my portable Garmin.  The way it gives a bar graph and verbal instructions to count down to the turn works just fine for me.  I like that it's built in which keeps the fairing area looking clean without dodads sticking out all over the place.  I like the built in dealer function 'cause we always try to hit them to collect pins and shot glasses (You can get them downloaded as Points of Interest in many other units).

On the bad side, programming a destination is a PIA.  I hate the way the interface works for entering Destination info.  I hate having to keep the disk in to really use it.  And I hate the $1000 cost.  Had it not come built in the my Screamin' Nemo I'd have stuck with my Garmin and NEVER paid any where near that much.

One last point.  I've found it to be much less accurate then my Garmin.  Even though I've been told they all use the same map source (Navteo) and I have the most recent CDs I still can't find certain destinations.  Or it sends me to wrong ones.  I entered an Address in downtown Pittsburgh for the H.O.G. Primary Officer Training.  It took me to the other side of town and left me in a neighborhood where my bike was worht much more then any of the houses.  Not real comforting.  And yes I entered the address correctly.  It didn't realize this particular street had an east and west side.  Neither did I and no map ment that I couldn't see it was well away from downtown Pittsburgh.  Which of course is one reason why the map would be good even if I don't like it.

J-Carr,
That second paragraph was from the heart, LOL.

We had the same thing happen us last year in Pittsburgh.
My friend had the TomTom (MC version) and I had the Zumo.
They both had us in neighborhoods that we didn't need to be in, if you know what I mean.
As you mentioned Garmin is Navteq and TomTom is Tele Atlas, I think they both need to re-map Pittsburgh.

Well it appears I have it working now.
I went for a ride, hit HOME, and it directed very nicely.
For safety sake, I have decide to carry the CD's in my tour pak for future reference though!  ::)

You may want to burn copies of those CD's to carry w/you at all times. Better to loose damage a copy then the original.

I knew the way back from York but hit "Home" when I got on the on the bike underway Sunday.  It said 430 miles (I'm knew it was 300).  For the 1st 2 hours it kept trying to re-route me.  When I finally made it on rt 15 north of Williamsport going 75 it was telling me I was "Off Road" most of the way to Corning, NY.  Also, when I went down I stayed at a friends house in Bellefonte.  His street wasn't on the list so I set it for the town and had beer at a pub in town and the bartender knew where the street was.  I carry the HOG atlas so I don't have to completely depend on the HK GPS.

I made copies of mine, put the originals in a safe place.  That way I don't have to worry about them getting stolen out of the radio, or my fat fingers dropping them and getting them scratched.
