2006 EPA Regulations
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:23:39 PM »

I've seen a couple of recent magazine articles regarding the new 2006 EPA Emission Regulations for motorcycles.  From what I can see they are pretty stringent.

Has anyone heard what the motor company is doing to the 2006 models to meet these requirements?  Are catalytic converters and air pumps in our future? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

That's no great loss.  First time I started an EFI Harley in cool weather I was hooked.  Starts quick, hot or cold.  Doesn't spit and sputter whan you first take off.  More efficient fuel controls for both efficiency and power management.  And, oh, did I mention that it starts right off the bat hot or cold?

Granted, I can't tinker with it on the side of the road should a problem arise (or at least not much).  But that's what road side service is for.

That's really not my thought process.... I like to tinker... I like carbs.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] But you do have a persuasive way of putting it. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I tinker with carbs on the old cars.  Just want to ride the bike (ok, I tinker with it to but in different ways).

I see that the aftermarket crate motor companies are in the process of creating and advertising "EPA Approved" motors.  Saw an add from RevTech the other day.  I'm not sure what makes it EPA approved.  Probably leaner than a popcorn fart.

TB welcome to the site.

I read an article in one of the magazines (six months or a year ago) regarding this issue.  The "small" bike and engine producers (I don't remember the exact unit number........maybe 5,000) are not held to the same EPA regulations as the large producers (HD, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, etc.).  They have EPA restrictions but they're much less than the larger manufacturers.

From what I have read, that number is now "1" thanks to our Washington buddies.  All manufacturers, no matter how small, are now under the new EPA rules.

In 2006, an individual person building bikes can only build ONE bike in their [bgcolor=Red]lifetime[/bgcolor] that does not meet the rules.  All subsequent bikes MUST meet the regs.  If your one and only bike is lost, stolen, sold, destroyed.....it doesn't matter to them, you have already build your one non-EPA legal bike and you are done.  Period.    Gee, and we elected these guys!!!!

I have seen lots of articles on the EPA emissions in motorcycle magizines. I am not sure how this will effect us. American Iron had a interesting article about the emissions in its latest issue. [smiley=confused5.gif] [smiley=furious.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=shocked2.gif]
