How Many Do Your Own CVO Maintenance?
« on: May 03, 2008, 05:41:54 PM »

Facing the prospect of my new/used CVO and realizing that I have a lot to learn...

Just got my supplement and waiting on the base manual for the 2003 SERK - and remembering back to the days when I had my last HD that they are special tools, difficult to access, very touchy rides.

Many of you do all your own?

I am very self sufficient - have never let anyone wrench on my beloved 98 F-150 with 20's, full urethane suspension, cat-back and much more...  Same with my Kawa KLR-650, do it all myself and it rides me to work every day and back.  Used to build engines all the way back to high school, and have access to full blown hobby shops (not much MC support there however)....

Can I do the same for my CVO?   :nixweiss:

I do all of my schedule service at home. For repair stuff, I usually take it to a trusted indy. Never a dealership unless I break down on the road and have no other choice.

I do everything but run the dyno - and that is only because I don't own one....  My goal is no one touches my bike but me...  everything from routine maintenance to upgrades to OCD to rebuilding my motor due to the dreaded head gasket leak.  So far so good...I get all the credit and all the blame for the outcome of my efforts...

It sounds like you're a perfect candidate for the HD Wrench At Home program. There's just not much that's difficult on these bikes. If you're going to get inside the engine or tranny then you'll need specialized tools, but I can vouch for not needing any special tools to do a frame-up rebuild without anything really specialized.

I used 2 four foot levels and an angle guage to perform the vehicle alignment, but that was the most sophisticated tool I used during the whole rebuild process.

Get to know your bike. It will thank you for it later.

Buy the repair manuals for you bike and I hate to say it, but go to the dealer and buy the parts book for your bike. Their might be another place to purchase that book...someone will probably chime in on that one.

Everything is layed out clear enough for anyone with a mechanical background to work on their own scoot

Good Luck :2vrolijk_21:       now you can only blame yourself :confused5:

The Supplement arrived today - and the base manual should be Monday or so...  It was that the one post about the $469 oil change that made me ask this...

Thanks!

wow, that is some undertaking!  I am not afraid to dig in, just need to give extra care in my wrenching efforts due to the paint/chrome etc...

I have a family member who is an Army LtCol and works in Special Ops stuff...  I can have someone killed with extreme violence in total secrecy, and it would only cost me beer as well.   :bananarock:

Sadly that does not help me with my SERK.   :P

But if you change your own oil, filters and make the needed adjustments -- do you have a challenge from the dealer if you want to make a warranty claim?

And if you use a dealer for maintenance, does HD have a central service app (like Lexus or BMW) to see your bike's service history?

1. Record the service in your manual and save receipts.

2. No they don't. You will only get receipts from dealer H-D doesn't have a customer accessable data base to see your service records.
