1st to 2nd gear
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:21:38 PM »

I"ve been riding ror 35 years and always thought I had smooth shifting skills.  But I am having trouble upshifting from 1st to 2nd smoothly.  Lots of jerking.  Over 1,000 miles on the FLHTCUSE3 and I am really trying.....

No problems in any other gear to gear upshift.

Is this related to the fly-by-wire throttle?

jwygo,

At what RPM range are you shifting? If you shift @ 2500 rpm or less you will get some lugging and that may be what you are calling the jerking. Try taking it up to around 3500 rpm when you shift andsee if thattakes care ofyour problem

Drain the Syn 3 and put in some real tranny lube. Oh yeah, change out the other two holes as well.

As 07 CVO noted, you may be shifting too soon and letting the rpm's drop too low.  The Cruise Drive trans has a different first gear ratio than the traditional Harley 5 speed (lower numerically), and there have been enough complaints like yours to lead at least one aftermarket company (Baker) to work on a "fix".  Folks have also expressed concerns about the amount of clutch slipping required to get underway on a heavily loaded Touring bike due to that same first gear ratio.

Try shifting out of first at no less than 3000 rpm and see if that doesn't solve the herky-jerkies.

Also, don't hold the clutch long.  I pull mine in just an inch or so and only have my fingers on the clutch for a fraction of a second.  And don't touch the throttle until the clutch is fully released.  A lot of the jerkiness can be caused by hand timing that will work itself out with experience from you.  These bikes have a very responsive throttle that takes a lot of getting used to in 1st and 2nd gear.

I had this same problem a few months back along with being hard to get in neutral when bike was stopped and engine running.  After the dealer bled the hydraulic clutch problem went away.

Thanks everyone.  Answers like this are what this board is for.  I go in for the 1,000 mile service next Tuesday.  Before then I'll try the 3k RPM shift and the clutch lever idea and let you know.

GRC and 07: I've notice I run better at 2,800 to 3,500 rpm at the higher gears.  But I haven't really watched it in the 1st to 2nd range.  It's strange being able to go 60 in 3rd if I want.  This 6 speed and the 110 engine are really fun.

You who suggested I wasn't getting enough rpm before shifting to 2nd win the prize.  I experimented over 400 miles this weekend and found out if I shift at about 3100-3300 it works best.  Very smooth. I felt like my old self again.

Took my bike in for the 1000 mile service today and was told the same thing by the service mgr.  He says I should run it out to 5k every so often. It won't hurt anything.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
