Syn3 for primary??
« on: May 14, 2005, 08:21:01 PM »

Read all the reports you guys have put out there about the problems with syn3 in the tranny, and have just recieved 3 qts of Shockproof heavy duty that I am going to put in the tranny.  How do you guys all feel about the syn3 in the primary?  I feel comfortable with the syn3 in the motor, haven't heard anything negative about that.  Any info on the performance of syn3 in the primary?

I agree with dude.  Early on there were some claims of clutch slippage with the Syn3.  Can't say for sure if that was fact or fiction, but I haven't heard anything negative lately about its use in the primary and I have not had any issues with it myself.  You took care of the trouble spot. I had my own little test last year in the primary, before harley made synthetic oil they said do not use synthetic oil in the primary due to the fact that the oil was only for cooling and synthetic would be too slippery. I went between syn3 and regular primary oil twice and there was at least twice the crap on the drain plug with the syn3, I will always run regular oil in my primary from now on. I use syn3 in the transmission and engine with good results. Do this test and see for yourself.

Just under a quart in the tranny.

I just switched to Shock oil in the Trans. I haven't noticed a big difference yet, but I much rather have the heavier gear oil in the Trans.

I also switched to Mobil One "V-Twin” 20w-50 for the motor and primary.
From the reports I have read, the HD Syn3 is only 60% synthetic anyway.
Mobil One's history is undeniable. We use it in all of our 4-stroke outboards that are always under heavy loads (recreational boat towing) with excellent results.

So what does all that mean in REAL world terms?  I'll be replacing the motor at 175,000 instead of 200,000?  Or something more serious?  Why would HD recommend it for what would be more severe use?  Seriously.... help me understand this.  I'm more than willing to switch [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Good Point Shovel, for those that don't have the manual the level should be no higher than the bottom of the clutch spring with the bike level.

DJW, just a point you should be aware of.  A stroker will not get anywhere near 100k, I expect to do upper end by 50k.  The longer stroke gets sloppy after a while and creates wear on the cylinder walls, loss of compression, and a need for new rings and pistons.
This is at least the most common problem on strokers that the custom shops build.

Do you follow the recommended maintenance procedure in your automotive manual? Many autos have the "change the oil at 7500 - change the filter at 15000" maintenance schedule (except severe duty). These maintenance schedules were adopted years ago for one reason, $. Over the estimated 100000-150000 mile vehicle life expectancy the “annual maintenance costs” are lower. Automobile manufacturers play the odds; I believe HD may also be playing the odds. They are selling the oil, and they want your market share.
BTW, some of the comparison reports out there list Syn 3 as only being 60% synthetic.

Hey Spyder.. what's up? [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Shovel, I have a manual... but why is that?  When we do (police) skills competitions we lay the bikes on the ground (right side) and fill the primary to the rim.  Runs for hours... at the friction zone... gets REAL hot, and no probs.  As a result I run my personal bikes overfilled in the primary and no probs.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
