Dealer Just Called, I have a leaking Head Gasket.
« on: May 15, 2008, 08:04:40 PM »

I had hoped to Avoid the Leaking Head Gasket. While My Bike Was In The Shop For Bad Heated Hand Grips, They Found The Leaky Head Gasket. My 07 SEUC has Just Over 7,000 Miles. Never Abused. I am so happy I bought the extended Warranty for this bike. I have owned 11 new Harley's, this is the first one to need head gaskets. Sad for such an expensive bike.

I hate to say this but I really don't think the extended warranty is going to help you. HD is not going to fix this problem. I also have an 07 with 45k miles on it. HD has rebuilt the motor (two different shops) twice. After the last "fix" I took it to an well respected indy in my area. After the indy and their machine shop looking at it, they kept the heads but said the cylinders need to go. So I'm paying for this repair, parts and labor (and I still have a few months left on the factory warranty). They called today and my bike should be done next week complete with custom made Nicocelle (sp) cylinders and fitted pistons.

You don't ride as much as I do but eventually, you get tired of the same old thing. In fact, I just bought another bike because I was tired of missing good riding time. It took 4 weeks to get the new parts made.

I do wish you the best. I'm pretty jaded at this point... but I know I'm not the only one!

I'll turn it over to Hoist now!  :2vrolijk_21:

Nikasil is a coating process for cylinder liners.  If that is what you're doing what company is actually supplying the cylinders?

Revolution is making them. I did know it was a coating. Pretty tried and true stuff I guess.

... My 07 SEUC has Just Over 7,000 Miles...

Scott would you please list your bike in the SEUC² registry. Chief wants a list to see which ones have problems. The link is in my signature. Thanks.

Just looked at that SEUC registry for leaking head gaskets, for the first time...........man, it's a real shame that this many new bikes can have this problem and HD sticks their head in the sand.

Why are people (Hoist, Coyotedata, etc. etc.) having to spend their own money to correct a known problem.  Is anybody forcing HD to buy it back under the lemon law that Calif. has?

Yeah, and he signed a document saying he can't talk aboiut it, then proceeded to quit the site. Some solution! ::)

FTW, FTF and FTD! Ya like the bike, do what you must and move on with your life. Life's too short to spend it running back and forth to these idiot dealers, who ultimately won't give ya back anything to be proud of anyway. That's why we did what we did JC. ;)

I don't know if I'd want Nikasil cylinders.  Nikasil is a plating directly on the aluminum instead of using a cast iron sleeve.  Widely used in race engines but prone to long-term failure when exposed to the high sulfur content of typical passenger car fuel.  Once the coating fails you get rings directly on aluminum and the engine self destructs rapidly.

Oh I hated to bring that up. But since ya did, I looked into it when I was looking at my options. Was told flat out not to consider it in a street engine. I also looked into CI barrels. N/A for the Twin Cam. 4" Axtells for the TC were my choice. They use base gaskets and the O-Ring to seal the groove left in the cases. ;)
