What's it worth -- 2002 SERK with 67,000 miles
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:15:43 PM »

I'm looking at a 2002 SERK purple with silver and black flames tomorrow morning.  It has 67,000 miles and the current owner says he's put 2,000 miles on it and bought it from the original owner through a dealer that made several long trips to Cali with it.  Any thoughts on value?  It supposedly has some upgrades, but not sure which yet.  I know it's late notice, but PLEASE HELP!!!

I checked out the BB values... It's kinda high mileage though.  He was asking 14,500, but has lowered it to 12,500.  Seems like a buy, but wanted to see what others thought.

Thanks Hard10 for your comments and help.  I went and looked at it this morning, and it runs great.  Seems like it's been cared for, although there are lots of minor scratches on saddlebag lids and tank.  Also needs a seat right away and tires before too long.  I updated the original post.  It has 67,000 miles, not 57,000 like I originally thought.  He had a meeting he couldn't miss, so we cut it short and agreed to get together later today so I can go over it completely.

How much does the mileage affect the price?  If there are scratches that penetrate the clear coat and go into the paint, can they be repaired without a complete repaint -- obviously this won't be "show quality" but good from 5' is all I'd be looking for.

Dave, unless it's REALLY cheap, I'd stay away and look for something with less miles. It's one thing if you put the 67K on it yourself and know the condition. But you have no idea what kinda 67K mileage/abuse was done by others. It's a potential money pit! ;)

I remember Spiderman talking about not worrying about clearcoat. There was something about that you could wet sand it down and re clearcoat with out much expense. You've got to figure $400 for a set of tires and $900 for a Corbin seat. As for mileage, it wouldn't bother me so long as the engine has no problems. Check the oil when you go back and look at the color. That should be a good indicator of when it was last changed. If he took the time to keep up with oil changes he most likely took care of the bike, I'd probably also look at a spark plug for the same reason. (Not that I would know what I was looking at :D)

In the previous post he said it was $12,500. Blue Book is $18,145.  $5645 below book that needs $400 in tires $900 in seat maybe $500 in paint sounds "real cheap" if you like 2002 SERK's. But you know me Howie, I need my fairing  ;D.

If it was me (and It's not) I would offer him 11,000 -He's asking 12,500 means hes looking for 11,500 or 12,000 Based on your math Seat and tires 11,000 would be the best I could do.

No matter how many miles it has on it, WE know your still gonna spend more on it anyway in Chrome if nothing else. :)

I'd ask about the cam chain tensioners if they have been replaced/checked. If not it would be something with that many miles on it that would need attention. If it needs tensioners then you are looking at oil pump, lifters, and pushrods (unless you take the heads off).

Somehow that didn't stop me from the 08 SEUC   :-\  It really did run good, and Vaz's price is where I'd start.  This will be for my wife Lisa (except for when she's not riding it and I want to), and won't have the miles that mine gets.

I'll ask him about it and look for that in the service records later today.  Is there any inspection cover I could remove to check it?

Remember AJ's post above.
Cash talks, b/s walks.
What dOOd said is important.
And finally Vaz is right, 11 out the door and spend a little on it and it will be fine.
67K is ok unless it's been abused. (imagine a SE being abused, what a thought)
For 11K if I wanted it and it ran out good I would pull the trigger!

There was a really nice purple one listed here last year that was about 10k miles and he wanted $15k.  If I hadn't had a deposit on the new 08 SERK Annie, I would have bought it.  I think it was in Illinois not too far from Missouri.  It was listed for sale quite a long time.  Do a search in the for sale forum and see if it shows up.
