Stupid Question
« on: May 16, 2008, 09:12:42 AM »

Hey, can anybody explain to a newbie about what these tuner/serts really are and how they work.  My knowledge right now is that you plug them into a computer and they tune the pipes.  Why does each bike need its own (can't the dealer just have a set?) and can they be reused.  Mostly what the heck am I paying for here?  Thanks! :2vrolijk_21:

What these tuners do is for bikes with EFI they allow you to electronically change the ECM that regulates the Air Fuel mixture. In the past with carb bikes people used to just adjust the carb or change out the jets in the carb. The reason the dealer can't have just one and use it on every bike is because the SERT or other module will need to (marry up) to the ECM. Once you have the map loaded you just need to keep the SERT handy in case the ECM needs to be re-mapped if you change something or if for some reason the ECM goes bad down the road

I hope this helps

It's actually much deeper than that. Besides AFR, you can setup the entire tune of the engine. Each cylinder parameters gets adjusted separately to provide optimum efficiency. AFR, Timing, FI flow, volumetric efficiency, etc. Just about everything related to the combustion efficiecy can be readjusted from factory settings to get the motor setup like it needs to be. And optimally it needs to be done on each individual motor as no 2 motors are the same, regardless of their specs. ;)

And there are lots of options for systems capable of performing this task - The Screamin Eagle Race Tuner, Power Commander, Zipper's Thundermax, Terry Components, Daytona Twin Tec, S&S has a version and many more.... (although all are not yet available for the 08's)

Thanks guys! That clears it up pretty good.  Sounds like the person doing the tuning needs to know what they're doing.

Exactly, that is why most folks here recommend you pick your tuner first, and then purchase the system they are most proficent at using.
