Windshield screw mount stripped
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:56:53 PM »

I accidently stripped the center brass bushing that the windshield screw goes into.  Acutally the fairing hole doesn't line up its a little off up too high & have to push down on fairing to get lined up. Rather than take it to dealer & have fix would like to do it myself. Are the brass bushings available from dealer and how hard is to get out & put new one in. Bike is an 08 SEUC.

Never changed one.  Just looked in the 05 parts manual and don't find a separate part number for the either  .

The part# for the threaded insert might be 16585-96..   :nixweiss:   I have one of the repair inserts in a bag in my tourpack with a couple extra screws.  The insert has a screw driver slot on one end but I have been told that the screw driver slot goes in first.  The inner fairing is really flimsy where the center insert goes and would be easy to break off and be big problems.

I didn't strip the threads on my center insert but the insert came loose on the OD when I had the 1 piece windshield bag on.  Was able to pull insert out and epoxyied and did away with the bag.

I don't remember the removed insert being threaded.  I also believe once you get the old insert out, you have to drill the hole oversize to accept the threaded insert.  Again, the inner fairing boss is really flimsy.  That's why I epoxied mine back in.

After writing this, I believe the above part# is for a smooth OD insert and the threaded "repair" insert is a different number.  Hopefully, someone will chime in who knows.

These things are easy to strip, especially the 2 between the forks.

I wasted a long time a couple of different times chasing threads and trying to make re-functional the inserts down low.  That's why I always just use the all-thread trick down there.  Easier re-install and you can't screw it up (at least not without really really trying to).

Have been fortunate and never FUBAR'd one of the windwhield screw's inserts though.  The outer fairing has been off the red bike something like 1,682,711 times so I guess I should be surprised it's never happened too.

The allthread between the forks is some of the best info I received from you early on here.   :2vrolijk_21:

True.  However....  If offered the choice of getting all thread jammed between my forks or riding the sisters I know which I'm taking :bananarock: .

Mine did the same thing (I think they all do sooner or later).  The replacement inserts are very hard to "screw in".  I drilled out the hole and used a tap to thread the hole to match the insert.  Still a "tight" fit but not nearly as bad as untapped.  Be careful that you don't break off the plastic piece on thr fairing when you do this.

So Bob had some trepidation about his part number

16585-96

Is this the right one?

Something we should buy and keep in the parts locker?

Update went & bought a 1/4-20" tap & retapped the bushing. All is well now. Called the stealer & they asked the mechanics & none of them had ever replaced one as of yet, they also said that they usually just fall out... The parts person said that they are threaded in... Just goes to show you that the dealer doesn't have a clue.....

After looking this AM, the spare insert I have is the 16585-96..  The part# of the screws between the forks is 2446..

Don,

You may have me beat.  I'm only up to about 1.2 million.  Damn, these should be velcro'd on...

Could someone please change the title of this thread?

Every time I see it my subconscious kicks in and I get excited.
