Morning All,
It's another 80 degree day  in North Idaho after a weekend of the same, though tomorrow and the rest of the week the highs will be in the mid-60's with rain  .

Anyway, tried to hook up my harley garage door opener and have not got it to work yet. My drive unit that hangs on my garage ceiling has 4 wires screwed to the terminals on it, red/green/blue/white. My Harley unit has 2 wires--red and black.

I hooked up the Harley red to  drive unit red and Harley black to drive unit white but no luck with the programing. Looking at the button on the wall it has two wires (white w/red stripes and white with orange stripes) on it and neither of them match the wire colors on the drive unit plus between the wall button and the drive unit 4 more wires show up making for the 4 attached to the drive unit....and they're all behind sheetrock except for the foot or so of exposed wire coming out of the ceiling.

So 3 questions:
#1) am I right in connecting Harley red to drive unit red and Harley black to drive unit white?

#2) I have an extra outlet on the same plug that the drive unit it is and it's on the ceiling a foot away from the drive unit. Harley owners manual says if the Harley unit it too close it can change the effectiveness of all openers, so should i consider plugging the Harley unit in further away?

3) If I have it wired right where should I start first to make sure the transmitter on the bike is connected everywhere it should be?

The two small wires from the Harley unit's receiver should go to the same pair of lugs that the wires from the pushbutton on the wall do.  If the colors/traces didn't remain consistent between the pushbotton and the motor unit your unit's owners guide will tell you which pair are for manual activation.  Short of that just very quickly short pairs of the lugs.  If the door opens you've found the right pair.

I wired mine just last week.  Unfortunately that is long enough for me to forget the wire pattern on my opener.  What I do remember is the second wire on mine was black, so I wired black to black, and the Harley red, to whatever the first wire color was.  Plugged the Harley unit into the ceiling outlet right above the opener, and everything works fine.

Don't need a wiring pattern.

As Don suggested, Just short the two lugs (should only be two) - door opens you have it.

The HD opener can piggyback the existing wires with no problem.

Like Twolane said, short the two terminals that go the the manual pushbutton and see if that activates the opener. Piggy back the Harley unit with them. The other two wires are from the sensors at the bottom of the door and are a safety detector to prevent the door shutting when an obstruction crosses while the door in in closing mode. I don't remember having to pair the Harley receiver to the bike but check the manual. Mine works great and is plugged in with the opener at the ceiling.

Don't forget after the 2 or 3 beers you need to stand on a ladder with someone at the bike to merry it up with the bike transmitter.

All newer openers have two small plastic boxes, one on the bottom of each side of the door track. One transmitts a light signal, the other receives. When the door activates to close, if this light beam is blocked even for an instant, it will reverse the door. Mine will pick up a cob web hanging on the bottom of the door track. They also serve to turn on the opener lights when the door is open and you walk through the beam. So, generally, the opener will have four screws, two for activating which is where you piggy back the Harley receiver, and two that connect to the sensors.

"Newer" is a relative term. I have socks 15 years old! HA!

Those beams work really good when they're taped together and set on top of the motor, out of harm's way!  Been there for 6 years now and have never had to replace one!

Mines 17 years old.  I had a keyless entry pad I connected to and just hooked up to the same leads - and it worked!

I heard a little over a year ago that CB radios with power amplifiers will trigger the Harley Gargage receivers and some cheapo garage door openors.

Duane, not all openers have just two.  More recent vintage will often have four.  The other pair goes to the sensors that send the door back up if someone/something intrudes on the beam during a down cycle.
