Engine noise
« on: May 25, 2008, 05:48:18 PM »

I own a 2004 FLHTCSE with 30,000 miles on it. I was getting a noise from my engine that was gradually getting louder.  I took it to my dealer and had them check the cam chains, they said they looked really good.  What they found was on the other side, a loose compensating nut in the primary case.  How it came loose I dont know how?  It is torqued at 150Ft. pounds. They loctited it and said I caught it on time before it did any damage.   Boy what a difference-sounds a lot better.  If it would of been cam chains I would have gone to gear cams a bill of 1800 bucks.  Luckalee it was 294 bucks.  This is the first problem Ive had with the CVO.  Really enjoy it. :)

Problems w/Compensating Nut was a known problem and a bulletin was out from MoCo in May '05 (see attachment). Glad you caught it in time. :2vrolijk_21:

I think most dealerships usually don't mention service bullitins......for what ever reason.  But if you're a regular and have a relationship and they know that you have the knowledge to understand then they will.

By the way, I think I had 31,000 miles on my bike when the cam chain tensioner went out (up in Idaho, 1,200 miles from home).  While the outside tensioner may appear to be alright (it's the one that's visiable) it's usually the inside tensioner that goes first.

If you're thinking about going with gear drive (Freedom Cycle makes on that's a plug and play for the 103" motor with no top end work required) cams, it's a lot cheaper to do it before any other damage is done.

What kind of noise does the compensating nut make ? Also, what general location did you hear the noise coming from ?

It is hard too describe the noise. I didnt know if it was  coming from the right or left side, the service manager said the same thing when he took it for a test ride,  It did make noise inbetween shifting gears and at certain RPM and got progressively worse.

Listen to JCZ, it's hard/impossible to see the inside one without disassembly further than they went.  You are due at this mileage.

Regarding the compensating nut, it has happened to several of us.

You will hear a knocking primarily when you let off the throttle. Noise comes from the primary....
