Oil Filter - can you remove it without a mess??
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:32:09 PM »

googled this before I posted...no luck.

Changed the oil in the SERK today, and man what a mess, all down the oil cooler.  Took the cover off, and it seems I was not the only one the dealers dad was having it serviced at made the same mess...

I had cut out a scoop from a Prestone container, and it caught some of the oil, but the rest just made a huge mess.   :furious2:

What's the answer??   :nixweiss:

Just take a piece of cardboard like the box a shirt would come in or one of those boxes you get at nice Dept stores at Christmas or template cardboard if you have any. Cut a piece about 8 inches wide and 16 inches long. Shape it in a 1/2 circle and slide it in under the oil filter. Bend the end out by the kickstand down so the oil will run into the pan and voila, you're all set. Custom chrome sells a plastic one that doesn't work worth a chit and costs $15 bucks.
If you do get oil all over everything, spray the area around your filter and lower front motor mount etc down with Gunk or some other type of engine cleaner (with a pan underneath of course) and then go over it again with an empty windex bottle full of water and it'll clean it all up good. Do not use Brake clean or Carb Cleaner as they wreak havoc on your paint.

Another trick is to break the seal on the oil filter then put a plastic bag over it and unscrew it the rest of the way. Let the filter fall into the bag and hold the bag there for a few minutes and let the rest of the oil drain in the bag. When oil stops dripping remove the bag and filter, ziplock it, and throw it away.  If you use this and the method BB gave you should have no oil getting into cooler.

First, use a K&N filter with the hex nut on the end.

Then I took a 2 litre bottle, cut the closed end off and then remove about 3" of the side to the cap.  Then you can slide this over the filter and catch the oil.

Everyone has a different way of doing it.  Everyone has given excellent tips and use what works best for you.

Aside from using a shampoo bottle that fits the filter real good, I always unbolt the cooler and take the cover off before I pop the filter off. Only takes a few minutes and it keeps from getting oil in the cooler.

2nd I put some oil absorbent pads under the filter area for the oil that will spill.

Sometimes I use the shampoo bottle and sometimes I use a 1 gallon freezer zip lock bag. Biggest problem with either of those is I always change the oil when the engine is hot, so ........................

That would only have been with the original 110 motor, (you would not be able tell with al the other leaks)

Or use an awl and poke a hole in the bottom of the lowest part of the filter.  Then put a sheetmetal screw in the hole before removing filter.

OK I do change a lot of oil up here. The easiest and quickest way is to take the box the filter came in. Break it open and slide it up under the filter. It not only works good it works great. And the box is only $10.00 and you get a free filter with everyone!!!!! TAAAA DAAAA!!!!!
