Use the isolator or not, With or with running LED's Pich a wire, get water(coroaded) in the wiring (plug) (over time) You will find yourself stopped on the road looking for a fuse and the reason, With the isolator you only lose the trailer and the bike's lights keep running as well as the ECM doesn't go into any faults because the isolator is doing it's job.

Not saying my way is better than any other, just offering it as an alternative to a bird's nest under the seat. I chose a neat installation over system isolation you get with the isolator. Plus, Obi Wan had such bad luck with his isolator, I didn't want to go down that path.

Don, certainly not meaning to downplay your experience but it is strange that I've used the isolators on 3 bikes over 9 years and never had any problem.  Wonder what the difference is.   

I've used 4 over the last 12 yrs and never had a problem or a "bird's nest" the brick tucks in the battery tray ? All I said was use if you want to or not, if you don't you can be fat dumb and happy for a long time then a sudden problem with come up that you long have forgoten about and the bike quits or throws a code and you case a rainbow on the side of the road with a flashlight in your mouth without the isolator. Just my thoughts and suggestion to be considered for all the folks that may read this and not post and take advise without both sides of the potential issue.

Certainly not going to get too wired (pardon the pun) up about it either way.  I keep the sealed plug in the end of the harness when the trailer isn't hooked to the bike.  That's a weather tight connector.  As the trailer's harness connector is.

Some time down the road might get a failure.  It's not a difficult thing to isolate (again, pardon the pun) if there is.  And it would very likely only be on one leg.  So the entire rear end wouldn't be dark.  Just one function.  If the isolator fails the whole rear end is dark.  That's a trade off for consideration either way.

In my case alone, however, it might fail later without the isolator.  It did fail now though.  Twice.  So I'm content the way it is.

Tentatively, I have us leaving Williamsburg on Thursday 18 Sep, then spend the night in Knoxville and pick it up Friday Morning.  From there head towards Mammoth Caves and then spend the night in Bowling Green area.

Does anyone know how much time I would need at Bushtec?  Should I have them install or ship the hitch to me before I leave home?

I would have them ship the hitch to you. It's easy to put on and that would save you waiting for them to install.

Regarding the hitch, does anyone have a picture of a Bushtec hitch on their bike with and without the receiver installed??

I was wondering how it looked on a plain rear fender without a bumper.

I know Don's SEEG has the Streetglide light on the bottom but didn't pay any attention to how it even looked when in York.

As best I can remember, it took Bushtec about 3 hours to install the hitch and isolator when I took the 06 up there, nice clean installation.  They also stock the H-D chrome V-rail to fill the gap between the fender and the hitch.

I ran over there Wednesday and got to bushtec about 6:00. It was about 400+ miles for me and since my appointment wasn't until 9 Thursday morning, I was able to get some very nice rides in all around that area. I stayed at a nice clean Hampton Inn just around the corner from Bushtec and had a great meal some resturant across the street in a large state park. When I got to Bushtec at 8:30, they were ready to get started. While they did their work, I took a tour of the facility. Trailer hitch, wiring and some last minute changes I made (switched to LEDs and added something else?, can't remember what, it WAS a couple of weeks ago and my memory last about 7 minutes). It all took 2 to three hours and they do have a big screen TV and plenty of bike books in the waiting area.

I'll get a picture later of the bike with the reciever removed, as it stays when I'm not using the trailer. With the reciever removed you see nothing at all, the black hitch frame is hidden behind the chrome V-rail and the filler panels.
As for doing the hitch yourself of having them do it, I'm a bad one to ask because I can screw up anything with a screwdriver. Watching them do the install, it would have taken me 6 hours and lot's of damage to do what they did in a couple of hours correctly.

Bob, without a rear bumper or that Street Glide fender extension you would be able to see some of the bracketry; even without the hitch in the receiver.  I don't have a picture of the hitch on the bike without the fender extension so can't show it to you naked.  The extension went on before the hitch in my case.  But can show how much is seen both with and without the hitch sticking out.

With the hitch in.  Notice the black brackets outboard of the fender extension.  That's all you see of the new parts when the hitch is removed.

No hitch.  You see a little bracketry.  If you didn't know it was receiver bracketry you'd think it was just part of the bike.
