Strange noise from front brake
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:59:30 AM »

Hi everyone,
I have an 08 SERK and for the first time using ABS brakes on a bike.  I have noticed that every time I hit the front brakes, it make a clunkin noise.  If I brake several times, I only hear it the first time, but if I wait for about 20-30 sec. or longer and brake again then I hear it.  Is this normal?  or could it be combination of air in lines and ABS system?  They work fine and I don't hear anything from back brakes.  Any ideas?
I guess bleeding the lines won't hurt since I have to take the forks off to send them to TRAXXION (another one bite the bullet   :zHole:) as soon as I get my shop manuals that's been on back order for the last 3 weeks  :furious2:.

Fred,

Be Careful. The ABS system requires the Digital Technician to bleed the brakes. You can't use normal bleeding procedures.

Thanks Chuck.  I have to get the first service done in next couple of days.  I'll ask the dealer about it and have them do it if needed.
On a side note, I talked to Dan at Traxxion,  He has some 300mm (11.8") Bitubos in stock if any one interested.

Just got my first service done and when I asked them to check the noise, first they said "it might be the front end but we check the brakes anyway".  When I went to pick it up they said the front rotor bolts were loose ( I don't know which one and I'm glade I still had some front brake, riding at 80-90).  The tech said that the test ride was fine and no more noises, BUT when I left the shop I heard the same clunk again and also my front brakes are not the way they were before, not nearly as strong.  No way I could stop fast.  I got home and used some brake cleaner on it.  I have the Dyno tomorrow at a different shop, I'll ask them to check it.
Apart from that, they did a good job, even cleaned the bike :) best service experience in last 2-3 years.

Just got back from dealer,  Different location and different tech.  He checked the bike, said he can hear the clunk but doesn't think there is any thing wrong.  He believes it's because of the ABS brakes.
I guess I just let it go for now.

My bike doesn't have any clunk in the front brake.  I don't believe that is normal.  -Not sure exactly what the fix is, but good luck chasing it down.

Still there.  The tech says it's because of the split caliper.  I have check over and over to make sure all the bolts are secure.

Try using brake clean and compressed air and clean the retension system where the center plate & rototor are connected. Worked for me.  :2vrolijk_21:

check the torque on the head bearing. if it's loose it will CLUNCK under hard braking and sound like it's
 the brakes.                                           axil

torque after adjustingfall away or self centering fork assy. most manuals say 45 to 50 foot lbs. on the head bearing
nut. the last service bulletin from Harley said the torque should be 100 ft. lbs. i say 65 to 70 lbs. is more than
enough. the clunking sound I'm talking about is the pressure sound of the top fork clamp riding up on the adjuster
nut under the clamp. a manual will show a parts lay out and how to adjust the fork assy. i hope this helps.
                                                                                                 axil

p.s. this is only for head bearing nuts with lock plates.  others have a pinch bolt clamp set up and don't make
the same noise.
