Rock Chips??????
« on: May 30, 2008, 10:13:28 AM »

I've got might be a really stupid question but the thought has been bouncing around in my mind for a couple of days, why do CVO's rock chip so easily and cars don't? I spent Monday washing my cars and noticed not a single rock chip on any of them. It's certainly not the material or elevation above the surface because the SRT10, SL500 and the Range Rover all have lower ground effects that are of ABS and fiberglass. They have more mass therefore must get pelted more often. You know, sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I juss sits, this is one of the sits and thinks and it is giving me a headache. :nixweiss:

Where are your rock chips?  I have notice some on my fairing-but, with all the road types I have been on I am not surprised.

On my bikes, the front fender and lower fairings. I've noticed them on friends bikes just about everywhere, front of tank, fairings, leading side of sb's and bottom of rear fenders.

The  :cherry: 's front fairings and lower fairings chip real easily/bad.

I also hit way more bugs on my front than on a car/truck.  Hard to figure.   :nixweiss:

Defecation Occurs!   :huepfenlol2:  Seriously, there's a tiny nick on Thumper's outer fairing that's bugging me.  Somewhere here, someone posted a methodology to repair said nick with a touch up paint kit, some fine sandpaper, varying grades of polish........and alot of time/applications of paint to build up.  Not sure I possess the testicular fortitude to attempt such repair.  Would rather look over the shoulder of an experienced professional, take notes, and learn before I try something so potentially disasterous.

Well, I got one on the bottom edge of my front fender & the wife suggested using 'nail polish'.
I said nope, she found a color match to the red that was close enuff to get me to try.

Barely noticeable now...    :-\

Henry-

The above is the correct way but I don't have the patience so my nicks touched up are higher than the surrounding paint.    I have also always been afraid to sand down and then polish back.   The trick is multiple fine layers to build up to the surrounding paint.

Not only the paint, but chrome as well...ARRRGGGHHHHH!! Lower tubes have two-three "dings"...I guess it is inevitable that nice things only stay nice for awhile, but DANG! The number of chips and dings accrued in a year are directly proportional to how much the bike costs. When I had a Sportster, I got maybe 3 slight chips in two years. Now that I have a $30,000.00 Dyna, it only took months before I had a few chips to deal with. But, like that wise man always said, " don't sweat the petty things, pet the sweaty things"...

Got one of those too.  Fact of the matter is, the motorcycle is gonna get "weathered."  It sucks, but since we really ride these things, it's gonna happen.  Oh well!

Bob,
I can do that part........just haven't yet.  Been riding alot.  It's that whole "carefully sand down the built up area until it is flush/even with the surrounding paint" thing that bothers me.  I speculate I'd end up making it look worse than it does now.  Damage control has set in.  Until I can find an expert, I'll let sleeping dogs lie.

I've noticed that Harley paints chip extremely easy too. I don't think they use much for clear coats as the automotive industry does. I remember removing the seat for the first time and the seat bolt i stuck in my mouth fell out and slammed the back fender. Damn, I was two feet from the fender and that small bolt chipped the paint down to the primer. WTF- thats crazy,, cheap ass paint. at least it looks good, but damn you better baby that precocious shine.

The problem with the 2006 CUSE paint was 27 coats of clear!
I believe the major cause for the difference ( Car to Bike) is that we ride closer to one another on bikes and the rear tire is right there tossing stones. I had a friend that notices a big difference on trips to Vegas between my Springer and Ultra, he had to ride much further back when following the Ultra, throws more stones and sand.  Dave

Riding around DC this week I dodged a tire carcass big enough to take my head off, hit a piece of fender trim off a old Chevy in rush hour traffic, rode over a deer carcass scattered over both lanes of a 2 lane highway. I'd be happy with a few pieces of stinkin gravel on days like that.
By the way, you got some serious toys, my friend. A Mercedes, Range Rover and a SRT10!
