Sell em or keep em??
« on: June 02, 2008, 09:16:42 PM »

I am slowly making changes to my SERK - and as I do I have the stock "stuff" - shifters, brake, lever, windshield etc...

As many of you know, this was a legacy bike from my dad, and I do not intend to sell it...my son gets it when he is ready.

So - should I sell this stuff?  To put more flow towards the stuff I want/need?

Or keep it?   :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

There are always two camps on this. I unload it because I'll never use it again. I did keep some stuff for the old bike and wound up throwing it in the trash can when the new owner didn't want it. Most of the black stuff you can't give it away because everyone already has their own version sitting on the shelf.

No right or wrong answer Sean.  If you know for a fact you're never going to get a wild hair or other urge of nostalgia to turn it back at least cosmetically stock then the parts only take up space.  If you're not absolutely sure, however, or if just having some spares that might be handy some night when the dealership is closed is a consideration for purposes of having backups then some of it might be held on to.

A little nuttily I'm doing both; at the same time.  Many many changes to the SEEG over time since it was new.  Most everything that came off has moved on to someone else.  The SERG, however, I'm very scrupulously keeping it all from and cataloging.  Different feeling about each bike.  Neither wrong.  Just different.

This topic made me think, and the first thing that came to mind is I'm a "parts hoarder" like Chip :nervous: :huepfenjump3:

I still have all the take off parts from my :pumpkin:, some from my previous bike (Fatboy), and even a couple pieces from my ole rice burner.

Maybe one day I'll have enough to build a bike. :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

I guess what I am seeing is that from a financial perspective - with my 2003 SERK at least, it is not holding any kind of value that I would be concerned about not having it 100% stock or reversible to stock, like in I buy the farm in the line of duty and the wife feels no obligation to keep it (not likely, but hell I won't be caring much  :-\) and she is screwed since it doesn't have the full stock pedigree parts...

Most of the changes are to make it fit me better - so far.  And other then a few odds and ends I really don't want to make too many changes, it's a great bike as is.  I need a seat, and might want to add a tour pack - and I figure I need to add/upgrade to th gear driven cams...but other then that, I am just going to ride the chit out of it!

I busted weight allowance LAST move and that was before the SERK, the ride on lawn mower, the extra woodworking tools, fill in the blank...

I swore last move to NEVER do a DITY again - but we are already talking about it, and its a year away...and now I am already looking at trailers to haul my bikes up to VA.   ???

Not at all.  "Limited Production."  Yeah, sure; sort of.  But not nearly so that a bike that is 100% stock holds any particularly greater value than another bike that has been tastefully and effectively upgraded.  If the thought is saving the parts might someday significantly enhance the value of the bike that's one you can dismiss.

Parts hoarder HUH?
Thanks dOOd!

My take on the issue is that my 03 Silver and Black bikes and my SERG are the only bikes I have ever saved parts from.
Why, because they are keepers and someday someone from this site may need a part I have and it will be theirs.
Sean, if you have room, save it!
And that is quite a departure from my normal thought process.

Till the SERG and the S&B's the policy was,

If you can't use it, send it back.
If you can't use it, or send it back then give it away.
If you can't use it, send it back or give it away then throw it in the trash.

The S&B's and the SERG changed that thought process.
But only on those four things.

Depends on what you see the future of the bike being.

Are you going to keep it and pass it along to one of your kids ?

If so, in time putting it back to stock condition will increase it's value

And also, there won't be a lot of them out there.

I've often said that the most unusual bike at a rally is a 20 yr old bike that is bone stock

But that's just my $0.02

Any bike is only original once...at 35 years or age qualifies for amca judgement...
If it is not original in every way, it is considered "period modified"...and that is a horse of a different color when it comes to pedigree.

The parts shouldn;t take up too much room or put them on a hardtail bobchop.

My thought is to save everything, as I save it ALL now.

If space is not an issue and you can safely store stuff so it doesn't rust or degrade in any way, I'd save it.  If you move, deal with it then; move it lose it...

Someday those parts will be worth something for the purpose of restoring the '03 to as purchased condition.

Just my 2¢ worth on the subject.

If you ask my wife she'll say that I'm a pack rat, not a horder.  Pack rats save everything regardless of its potential value or use.  Hoarders save with a goal in mind.

I'd have to agree with her on this one.  I save things that I know will never use but I think it has value so I save it.  I've moved twice and still have crap from a previous life and haven't used it yet.

I save it.  I have parts both from my 95 Fatboy and from my 75 FL.  Ironic thing is....just about the time I think I should sell the parts off...someone needs a fix on a Sunday....
