San Diego to Bend Oregon
« on: June 03, 2008, 03:54:00 PM »

I am doing this little jaunt later this week.  We are hoping to make Stockton the first night.  Any suggestions for getting through LA.  Someone suggested taking I 15 north to I 210 east to the I 5 rather than take I 5 directly to Stockton.  Looks longer but could be faster  and less traveled.

You can stop by and say hi to JC while he recuperates in Sacramento...

Went through Bend the second to the last weekend in May.  For what it's worth it was cloudy and rainy.  Couple of riders went down trying to get into a rest area.  Thankfully no one was seriously hurt. The main route through Crater Lake was closed and we had to detour around the park as we headed south.

Will be in Bend to do a little fly fishing from the 7th to the 10th. I have an 8 piece 5 weight rod that fits in the tour pak

I spent the night in Lincoln City, Oregon last night.  Tonight I'm in Eureka, Calif.  We'll be back in Sacramento by tomorrow afternoon.  IROAR, when do you plan on being in Sacramento?  Or Stockton?  Jon (Jonga here on the site) is in Stockton and I'm in Sacramento (another forty minutes north of Stockton).

I'll shoot you my number.

I 5 is pretty boring and not too scenic. come up from s.d. on the 5 or the 410 and either take the pch hwy 1  thru malibu to the 101 or just get on the 101. maybe a little longer but way more scenic. santa barbara-solvang-slo-wine country-along the ocean for a lot of it.

I know this does not answer your question, but if you have the time take Hwy 1 up to 199 to 62 etc. It's a beautiful ride that's much cooler and more scenic than 5 or 101. Takes more time, but well worth it!

I know i'm crazy but:  north on the 15 to north on  hwy395 to west hwy 120 (tioga pass). takes you into stockton (the long long way) but very cool :drink:

I've made this ride to Oregon many times and know all the routes well.  First; it is important to check the weather.....it may determine your route.
I-5 is fast, boring and loaded with semis (it can also be HOT, HOT, HOT).  101 is more interesting, but will take longer.  1 is fantastic, but takes a long time and is often fogged in.  395 is also very cool, scenic, memorable, but long (Lake Tahoe).
If it were me...... I'd take 101 all the way to Crescent City  (San Francisco, the redwoods, etc.) and then take 199 to Grants Pass, Or., 62 to Crater Lake and 97 to Bend.
I-5 above San Francisco is fine and would save you time. Also gets you close to Sacramento if you want to stop there.
I tend to be like a stable horse, once headed toward home.....I want to get there fast, so I try to take more time getting there and less time coming back.
The best I can say about LA is that you can get in the HOV lane.....405 to 101.
Good luck and have a great trip.

That's a great idea. Plus, if there is no need to go to Stocton, 395 will take him all the way to Bend. I may just have to do that myself soon!

Since you used the word “faster” not “more scenic”, I concur with I-15 to I-210 to the I-5.  It is about 10 miles further but will get you through the LA mess with relative less stop-and-go…mostly stop on the I-5.  And, you will get thru faster.  I take that route every time I need to go North, unless it’s after 10 pm and before 5 am, in which case the I-5 flows as good as any alternative route.

Also, I-210 has a car pool lane.

Good luck

thanks to all who responded.  15 to 210 appears to be the fastest way to get thru  LA
If time permits I'll call our Sacramento brethren but should I fail to do so, thanks for the input. I hear our point Guard KJ might be the new mayor.  He comes with nasty baggage!

No they are not very forgiving, and our max speed is only 65mph. They doubled the cost of tickets about 5+ years ago to try and slow people down... NOT.
Keep a eye out for the deer & elk on the side of the road if coming up from Crater Lake area.
