SERT
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:38:32 PM »

Here's an elementary question. What is a SERT? I bought my SERK from the dealer and haven't done anything to the engine. Does that mean I need to have something checked, tuned, ???

SERT = Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner. A device used to program/adjust the Air/Fuel ratio in the ECM.

AD2, to answer your second question,  yes !  all harleys come set to an epa standard,  those settings are way to lean.  the race tuner can change any and all settings needed to make the motor preform properly. air fuel ratio, timing, rpm limit and so on .  there are other options like the power commander etc.etc. but i personally like
the sert .  your engine should be set by a good tuner not the epa.  hope this helps       axil

hdctss - Deadcenter Cycles fairing - Paint By Gene

AXIL - can the HD shop do a good tuning or do I take it elsewhere? If the HD shop is an answer, why don't they do it whenever I take the bike in and tell them "Do whatever it needs".

thank you for help

Not to answer for Axil, but just like anything else at a dealership you'll find some that are better (service/tuning/etc) then others. Below is the listing from the SE Catalog for the old SERT..

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE® PRO EFI RACE TUNER
This race-use only software package is a great product for making tuning adjustments to your fuel-injected Harley-Davidson® racer and has much greater capabilities than most competitive EFI tuning products. The EFI Race Tuner software is divided into two modes. Tuning Mode, which allows you to tune certain variables of the EFI system, and Data Mode, which can record and display real-time vehicle data. It can then graphically represent the tuning changes that have been made. This is exactly what racers of EFI-equipped Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been asking for…a way to tune their vehicle for ever-changing track conditions and performance product combinations. Data Mode can even produce horsepower and torque charts based upon the recorded data from your last run down the drag strip. The software is capable of monitoring up to 28 variables, and with such sophistication, it is the ultimate tool for tuning and gaining that edge on the track. Performance is the key and this product comes complete with many race-use Screamin’ Eagle calibrations, which may be downloaded and tuned to maximize the horsepower and torque of your EFI racer. The complete kit includes the tuning software on a CD and a communications interface that electronically locks to the ECM. The required cables to connect to a PC and the vehicle are sold separately. The software also contains an electronic User’s Manual that explains the Harley-Davidson EFI system and the EFI
Race Tuner’s capabilities. This manual can be referred to as you are tuning on the track or in the pits. Installation and effective tuning requires a high degree of skill and therefore dealer installation is required. Minimum PC requirements are Windows 98, CD ROM drive, serial port, 32 MB RAM, and 10 MB hard drive space. Not compatible with Windows Vista operating system. For race application only. Available September 2007.

32107-01H Fits ’02-’08 EFI Touring models and ’01-’08 EFI VRSC™, XL, Dyna® and Softail® models. $459.95

32127-03A Fits ’97-’01 EFI Touring models. Also fits ’95-’96 EFI Touring models when used with ECM P/N 32423-97B (sold separately). $459.95

Also available: (not shown)
EFI RACE TUNER CABLE KIT
32108-06 For use with Screamin’ Eagle EFI Race Tuner Kit P/N 32107-01F and 32127-03A.
Kit includes two cables: bike to interface and interface to computer cables. $29.95

Along with the cost of the SERT add another 3 - 5 hours of dyno tuning at a cost of $50 - $100 per hour. As you can see the cost of the product and tune can add up quickly therefore I doubt any dealer would automatically do this on a bike when a customer says "Do whatever it needs" unless they were specific in asking for these mods/additions. This product (SERT) also states it's for "Race Use" only and has the crossed flags beside it in the catalog which might cause warranty issues at some dealers down the road.

dood , you said it better than i could.  to repeat what's been said here before,  stock is to lean,  the best thing to do is find a good tuner and go with the system that he/she recommends. i like the race tuner,  others like the powercommander. most shops can tune it but not all techs in a shop can tune it. check around and maybe somebody on this site knows a shop in your area.   good luck                axil

The SERT is not only software, it is a little box. Take a look here here: http://www.motorcycledaily.com/efiracetunerkit.jpg
If you have all that, it needs to be installed (simple) and tuned (not so simple). Speak to your dealer, and find out if they have experience with the device. If yes, good (I hope they answer honestly). If not, find a dealer in your area, who has. Without tuning on your bike, the device will not perform as it should.

Ride safely,

If they gave you that (a $460.00 part) that's one heck of a dealership. :shocked2: Did you have any work done to your bike before you picked it up (pipes, AC, etc)? If so then they may have included this in the upgrades, but there still should be something on the receipts about it. :confused5: Oh, while on the subject of the SERT you see the small rectangular box w/the connections on each end for cables.... That is what's called the "interface" and is what marries to your ECM. You want to take very good care of this piece (don't loose it!!!!) otherwise the SERT is no good. Whenever any adjustments are made to your ECM they will need this interface to hook up between their computer and your bike to make those adjustments.

You're being very patient, Fired00d - thanks. Yes, they did give this to me with the purchase. So, I take the black box and the cd into the dealership and ask them to install and tune?

Ad, it might already be installed. Was it opened or sealed? They might have dropped a canned map in for ya. You get all those items back after they install and tune it. If that's the case, they were being honest with ya. They could have just kept it and you'd never have known. Find out if it's already installed. ;)

The CD will not be needed just the interface. The should have a copy of the software already loaded on their computer in the dyno room. If it were me I'd check my paperwork, find out why I had the SERT, what was done for a tune previous before seeing about another tune. Somewhere there should be a paper trail of what has been done to your bike.
