Common problem with the antenna inside the fairing. There are several ways to get it outside the fairing and improve reception. If you search in the electronics area, you should find several threads.

Works great when traveling on an open road.  I'll bet you're losing signal when there are rock faces, over hanging trees, or even close hills to your south.  There's a short buffer to keep it from cutting out when passing buildings but a couple hundred feet of no visible southern horizon will make it cut out.

Took mine in today for the 1,000 service, Service Manger told me the only "Harley Fix" was to place the antenna on the dash, So we placed it just above the speaker on the left front side fairing. drove home 250 miles work much better, does not look bad

Good job George. I wonder why they didn't tell you to put it on the dash? Some here have put them on the dash and covered it with the three pocket windshield bag.

Wedge it between the wind screen and the dash. Centering it looks best. Make sure it does not hit the wind screen or it will eventually scratch. With a black dash it blends into the background. I've had it in this position for 3 years and have near perfect reception.  Only time I have problems  is riding through a forest with trees very close to the road. I use velcro to mount it.

How much of a b!tch was it to get to the antenna. I've never had the fairing apart, only the little piece in front to rig the fog lights.

Pete, if I can do it, anyone can! It really is easy. There are a total of seven (7) screws. There are the 3 that hold the windshield then two under the speakers. The last two that are most difficult, because of the potential to loose them, are located on the chrome piece inside towards the forks. They are not on the red portion of the fairing but closer to the center and only hold the front part of the fairing. Hope this helps.
