Removed the adjustable doors on the lowers, WOW
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:39:37 AM »

I just removed the black adjustable doors on my lowers and WOW what a difference. Seems like the bike runs allot cooler now, even in traffic. Has anyone tried to alter the doors to be smaller so when they are open they don't even show? I was thinking about doing this as an experiment. How bout some feedback on this one, Thanks.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing!
Was it difficult to remove them?

the heat here in SE Louisiana can be brutal...

The hardest part is getting the dang glove box liners out, once that is done it is pretty easy. Remove the nut from inside 7/16 socket and the whole thing moves down. Ya will have to swing it to the inside (closed position) to remove it. It will take a little muscle to get it out. Overall not a bad job which can be done in about 10-15 minutes.

Good luck, you won't regret it.

And give up all that storage space?  No way Jose!   ;) Sounds like a reasonable idea to remove the flaps in summer and keep the look of the lowers.

I agree.  Pulling the lowers off dropped my engine temp by about 30 degrees.  Motor runs stronger as well.  Just a bit chilly in the morning but worth it.  Been thinking about the quick release kit in order to put them on or off quicker?  Has anyone tried that kit yet?

IRyde I bought the kit  of quick change hardware for 90 bucks from Harley but I don't know if I will ever put the lowers back on again. Motor performance and longevity of the motor is more important than looks.

Just pulled my lowers off yesterday...Wow

Lots of wind this morning...had to put pant clips on when I had my legs on the highway bars.  I was like an airfoil directing the wind up my body. The lowers work really well in that respect.

However, you get an enormous amount of cooling wind over the engine.  I can't say enough about that in this heat! It really helps.

But the most noticable thing of all was all that awful engine noise is gone...not exhaust drone...the clacking and chattering of all those parts is really reflected by the lowers, I had no idea!  All you guys griping about all those wierd noises coming out of your engine that your trying to figure out...don't, just pull the lowers and it'll be gone.

Trust Me, everyone should try it if only for a day, it's really simple to pull them.

I'm putting on the SE High Flow Breather anyway.

Just pulled the doors off the lowers. Took less than 5 minutes, but I think putting them back on will be another story, I'll find out in the fall. Haven't ridden yet though it looks like a lot more airflow will get through without them.

It's like riding my Springer Softail with no windshield at 85 mph!! Lot's of Airflow!! I ran into two guys this past weekend up in Phoenix with SEUC's and both of them had there lowers on and both bikes had the doors closed because they didn't want the hot air blowing on there legs??????????????????????? :'( :'(

I took my lowers off the day I bought the bike.  Cleaned them up real good and put a good coat of wax on them.  I then carefully wrapped them in some old towels and gently put them on the top shelf of a closet.  I will put them back on when I am ready to sell the bike ;)

I have a set of the HD snap-on vinyl lowers.  If I will be riding in temps below 40 degrees I can take them out of the saddle bag and snap them on -- then if it warms up later in the day, off they come and back in the saddlebag :2vrolijk_21:

I have never been excited about the look of the lowers anyway....that's just me.  And if my scooter is running cooler & happier, then I'm happy.

It just occured to me that many of you think removing the lowers is like riding around without your saddlebags or something. That H-D intended for them to be on the bike at all times. NOPE, they are an accessory that come as a standard item on the regular production Ultra Classics and the Screamin Eagle model baggers. They were not ever intended to be left on the bike during warm weather riding. Since I don't have an owner's manual for a model that comes standard with lowers, I can't look up the section on them but it would not surprise me if the OM says to take em off if riding in temps above (say 80) on a regular basis.

I'll have to look again (it's been awhile since I read the Owners Manual), but I don't remember anything in there about removing the lowers. Then again I've been wrong before so I wait to be corrected. ;D

This way I will not have to post again that I effed up. :huepfenlol2:
