How many miles per quart of oil do you get?
« on: June 16, 2008, 09:30:44 AM »

I have been keeping track of the oil consumption lately and last 2 k miles I have had to add 1/2 qt of oil every 500 miles. To me this seems like allot, is this normal? To date I have 5650 miles on it and it started to use oil after the head gasket change and it does not smoke. Does anyone have some pictures of the frame adapters for a bike jack that I could see that would work for a Dyna?
Thanks

Lenny, one question has to be to what level you're filling it.  For many bikes "full" on the dipstick is too full; and it will relatively quickly force oil out to get it back down where it wants it.  It isn't uncommon at all for these engine's happy-place to be about a 1/2 quart low.

Try not refilling after it gets a 1/2 quart down and see if the consumption/loss stops there.  If it does be pleased you've got one less thing to worry about it.  If it keeps going down then pay it more concern.

I was going to make the same comment.  My motor seems to like just under 3 1/2 quarts on a normal oil/filter change.  With this amount, I don't get any blow by and get no oil volume loss at all between oil changes...

My 08 SEUC never moves off the full mark on the dipstick....so far anyway.

I had an 02 Ultra and if I filled it to the full mark, it would drop down to about 1/3 qt. below the full mark in about 500 miles - after that it would not drop any lower before change time.  :nixweiss:

If you ask the dealer he will tell you that what you have is normal.  But "normal" seems to be whatever you happen to describe to them.  I've not had a vehicle yet, car, bike or truck that has used oil between changes, so I would tend to not agree with their assessment.  It may not be much, but I'd say it depends on where it is going, out the tailpipe, the air cleaner vents, or on the ground.

My '05 softail did the same thing, and I had to have the dealer verify every 500 mi. The rep showed me a bulletin from HD stating that 1 qt. consumption every 1000 mi. was within specs. I asked him if a judge would think so too. Two days later I had a new top end and rings, honing etc.

I change the oil on my 07 SEUC at the factory recommended 5K and have not seen any oil usage between changes.  I don't have enough miles on the 08 SG to see whether it is using any oil "abnormally".

Muff, I applaud your diligence.  I really do.  But I could never find the patience to change oil every 1900 miles or so.  My favorite thing about good synthetics is that I don't have to dink with the oil filter as often.

I've expereinced some oil usage with my '06 SE Ultra.  Last September it was using oil and people following me could smell it burning oil.  Valve seals were bad and were replaced.  I didn't do much riding after the seals were replaced as old man winter came.  This spring I changed the oil and immediately noticed the oil down on the dip stick, plus I could smell oil while cruising on the bike.  Took it back to the dealer and the plugs were fine so we figured the valve seals were not the problem.  Checked the air filter and it had a lot of oil in it.  They said I must have over filled it.  I try not to but I may of had it to the full line.  At this time it was down about half way on the dip stick.  They told me leave it at that level and check it again in 500 miles.  I now have almost 900 miles on it and it might be down just a tiny bit from when the dealer checked it but not much.  I just think that full on my bike is half way up the dip stick.  Any more and it's going to blow it out the air filter.

I have been told that in high temps that synthetic will just disappear to some degree.  Anyone know anything about this?  By the way, I'm using Amsoil.
