Hot running or CVO
« on: May 28, 2005, 10:45:22 PM »

I just picked up a yellow SEEG and have only put on about 150 miles.  Wow,  this engine runs hot.  I have removed the lowers but I am still running about 237 degrees f in city driving.  My last bike a 2002 road king only ran about 215 with a oil cooler.

Will it help to get a PCIIIusb,  or any suggestions?

Thanks

If the bike is a bit lean (as these seem to be out of the factory) than a Power Commander will help a bit as making the mixture richer will help cool things down.  Not a lot, but a little.

One thing to keep in mind though, I wouldn't automatically assume that the two instruments you're measuring with on two different bikes are so accurately calibrated that they could be that directly compared to one another  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Stock is leaned out to meet epa standards..........go to the dyno thread in the SEEG section to find multiple solutions.........

Good luck!

I vote CVO. I too had a RK that ran in the 220's at the hottest. The 103's just run hotter. Mine runs in the 240's under most conditions. That's with a PCIII. It did not make much difference that bone stock.

Try running a free flowing air cleaner a good set of pipes and then have the bike tuned. That will make a world of difference.

With the air cleaner and pipes if you don't do the Power Commander (or something akin to it) right away you might consider having the shop load the Stage I chip.  It's part number 32926-03B .  Without doing anything else it will richen the mixture a bit and smooth out some performance areas that you won't have realized you were feeling until you feel the difference.

I use a Power Commander but had the Stage I map loaded anyway just for the purposes of backup.  That way should the Power Commander ever flake out somewhere away from home and I have to pull it the bike falls back to a much better map than the stock base map.

I have mine set to the rich side in Florida for the summer, plus I run some 100 octane no-lead Sunoco mixed with 93 octane.

Thanks all for the comments,  I took off the chrome oil cooler cover and lost 10 degrees overall.  Next I will try a set of V&H ovals, PCIIIusb and se air cleaner,  unless anyone has a better suggestion.  Also,  I noticed the top hose to the oil cooler is bent/crimped a little and may not let enough flow.

Thanks again for all the comments.

P.S.  The yellow is going to get me killed looking at the pearl that changes from green to orange.  Just like a 60's drug induces moment. :-) [smiley=drink.gif]

I got to at least briefly meet DCFireman at York, PA for the tour we took the Monday after Maggie Valley.  I may be a fair to middling wrench but his pencil is sharper than mine so it's probably a good idea to hear how the THE DAWG barks.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Y'know all kidding to everyone aside that really was a great get together.  Certainly the best gathering of folks like that that I have been to in a long time.  For anyone on the fence about showing up next year please strongly consider it.  Would love to meet more of you and you'll have a great time.

I've got a very good system to keep me working about the oil temp on mine.  Got no oil temp gauge  [smiley=laugh.gif] .

If I can't see it I'm not going to be worrying about it all the time just because it's not there to look at.  Don't get me wrong, instruments are wonderful, and necessary; but they do give us something to fuss over.  [smiley=7.gif]

Really though, if it's starting to get warm enough to be a concern my legs are accurate enough instruments to give me some warning in driving conditions like city traffic or parade situations.  This is even more so when you consider that the ignition system itself is going to give you some warning on the newer bikes by killing a cylinder to help cool things down.

Would I mind an oil temp gauge in the dash if it was there and looked like a dead on match to all the others?  No, not at all.  Am I terribly concerned about not having one.  Well, not really.
